“Legacies” Recap: Trollhunters

On “Legacies'” last episode, “This Year Will Be Different,” Hope reunites with Alaric, who is now the principal of Mystic Falls High, while Lizzie meets a mysterious new crush. Josie and Landon run into relationship problems, while the Salvatore School’s new headmaster arrives.

The Popular Man | It’s day one of a new semester at the Salvatore School and the new headmaster, the conspicuously named Vardemus (Alexis Denisof), arrives and pulls a Willy Wonka by walking with a cane, only to reveal that he doesn’t need it. His first class involves Josie casting a nose bleeding spell on a girl making eyes at Landon because everyone assumes that he singlehandedly destroyed Malivore.

Meanwhile, Hope follows the blood of the wounded troll from last week into Mystic Falls High School, where she meets up with Alaric, the school’s new principal. She pretends to be Hope Marshall and enrolls at the school, where a girl named Mya offers to do her makeup, before both she and Alaric find the troll in the basement. They crossbow it to death, but Mya witnesses this, so Alaric calls MG to compel her to forget.

Lizzie Saltzman’s Semester of Yes | Lizzie is back from Paris and pledges to be a better version of herself by saying yes to everything- Isn’t this the premise of “Yes Man?” This includes agreeing to go on a study date with MG, only for Thomas Doherty’s Sebastian to appear from nowhere and be mysterious before telling Lizzie that his life is complicated. Lizzie is, of course, smitten to the point that she brags to MG about how much she likes him, breaking poor MG’s heart.

Dynamic Duo | As Hope and Alaric go to cleanup the troll’s dead body, Alaric figures out that whoever Hope is, her existence was erased by Malivore. They find the troll’s corpse missing, natch, and track it down to the town square, where it seems to be going after Landon.

The troll turns out to be a cyclops, so Alaric crossbows it in the eye and kills it, as Landon sees Hope from a distance. He catches up to her and vents about a bad date with Josie and then offers Hope her favorite milkshake that he ordered for no reason. This is enough for Hope to tearfully confess to Alaric that she’s Klaus and Hayley’s daughter and that they knew each other.

After Josie talks with Landon about their bad date, blamed on Josie’s allergy to seaweed at the sushi restaurant, she is met by Vardemus, who invites her to an advanced placement offensive magic class. That night, as Jed is out jogging by the cemetery, as one does, he is literally stabbed in the back by the cloaked figure.

“Legacies” airs Thursdays on The CW.
