“Legacies” Recap: Days of Future Past

This week’s “Legacies” goes all alternate reality on us, while giving Jenny Boyd a chance to show off her acting chops in “There’s a World Where Your Dreams Came True.” Lizzie encounters a genie, who grants her wishes at great cost, leading Lizzie to discover something terrible about herself.

A Vicious Cycle | Josie and Lizzie return from visiting Caroline in Europe and Lizzie is pissed and self absorbed as always when Alaric forgets to pick them up from the airport. Seconds later, she is met by a blue genie, scratch that, jennie, who offers to grant her wishes. Naturally, Lizzie’s first wish is that Hope never went to the Salvatore School. SNAP! We’re in an alternate reality where Alaric is now sporting a beard, but the Saltzmanns are dirt poor because Klaus never donated to the school.

With the school starved for new students, Lizzie does a locator spell to find magical youth and they head to Rousseau’s Bar in New Orleans, where a goth, bloodthirsty Hope is soon recruited into the school again, much to Lizzie’s dismay. When the jennie reappears, Lizzie wishes that the school never existed. SNAP!

Be Specific | Now, the twins are enrolled at Mystic Falls High School and Alaric is a drunken history teacher. Even more upsetting, Josie is the homecoming queen, dating the jock Connor, and is the head cheerleader with Dana waiting on her hand and foot. But when Lizzie spots Connor and Dana making out and tries to warn Josie, Josie lashes out at her and tells her how her “episodes” have driven Alaric to drinking.

To make matters worse, yet surprisingly offbeat, after Lizzie lets a magical rage out in the middle of the school, Hope, Kaleb and Pedro roll up in a BMW with the Mikaelson crest emblazoned on it. In this world, Klaus founded the magical school and Hope and company are essentially the Men In Black recruiting Josie, Lizzie and Alaric into the school.

Lizzie Saltzmann, Harbinger of Doom | For her third wish, Lizzie wishes that Hope was never even born! Sounds dark for a 16 year old to essentially commit murder? Just you wait! SNAP! Now, Lizzie is in a world where Klaus declared war on the human world without Hope to tame him and now everything is “Days of Future Past” levels of bleak!

Don’t believe me? When Lizzie returns to the ruins of the school, Penelope and Alaric are having a funeral- for Josie! Lizzie is naturally crushed, but fortunately for her, the jennie tells her that the whole “Three wishes only” thing is bull and she’ll grant Lizzie one last wish- on the condition that Lizzie gives her the urn.

As Lizzie tries to find the perfect wish, Alaric reveals to her one pretty big tidbit: Twins in the Gemini Coven go through “The Merge” when they turn 22, and one twin absorbs the magic of the other, killing that other. In this reality, Lizzie found out about the Merge and killed Josie by accident in order to save her own life. So, if you’re ever having a rough day, spare a thought for what poor Lizzie goes through this week.

Good news: Lizzie finds the perfect wish to get her out of the apocalypse: She wishes that the jennie was never sent to Malivore. An unfortunate byproduct of that is that since she and the jennie will have never met, Lizzie won’t remember Alaric telling her about the Merge and will likely have learned nothing from her experiences. But, too late! A wish is a wish. SNAP! Now, everything is back to normal, but is Lizzie a better person as a result? Time will tell…

“Legacies” returns with new episodes Thursday, February 21 on The CW.
