“Legacies” Recap: Family Secrets

“Legacies” expands upon its mythology and mystery in “Maybe I Should Start From the End,” in which Alaric and Hope team up to find Landon, who is obsessed with finding his biological mother. The quest leads to an explosion of revelations, including an unexpected sacrifice.

Family Reunion | Just to tease us, this episode starts at the end, specifically Hope, Alaric and Landon waking up in the middle of a field with a hole in the ground with no memory of how they got there. Flashback to three days earlier, Hope tries to sneak out to find Landon after her bracelet lights up and Alaric agrees to go with her.

Landon himself manages to find his birth mother Seylah (“Man of Steel’s” Ayelet Zurer), who ends up drugging him after he tells her his life story and tying him up in her house, until a black goo monster arrives and she chops its head off with a sword. When Alaric and Hope arrive at the house moments later, there’s a cleanup crew telling them that it’s a gas leak, “Men in Black” style.

Filling in Blanks | Seylah takes Landon to a motel and confesses that she really is his mother, just as Hope and Alaric storm in.

After introductions, Seylah tells her story- she used to work for a mysterious organization executing monsters and sending them to Malivore, erasing all memories of their existence. But she walks out on Landon, saying that she’s not ready to be his mother.

Alaric talks to Seylah outside and she reveals some missing information- When her employers found out that she was looking into where the monsters ended up, Seylah was thrown into Malivore and woke up two years later, with no one remembering her- and pregnant. Meaning Malivore is very likely responsible for Landon’s conception.

Something Fishy | Just then, a merman explodes out of the blood soaked bathtub of the hotel room, coming after an urn from Seylah’s house that is the second key to Malivore. Hope throws Landon’s tracker bracelet into the urn and lets the merman take it away to a facility under the name Triad Industries, where a bomb outside blows up the merman and knocks out Hope, Alaric and Landon. But during this, Seylah sneaks into Triad’s building and throws herself into Malivore a-la “Alien 3.” Oh, and Malivore is inside the building a-la “Stranger Things.” Throwback alert! When the others wake up, no one can remember how they got there, what happened and no one has any memories of Seylah.

Alaric takes Landon back to the school and agrees to house him there. After Landon gets settled, Hope asks Landon to officially be her boyfriend. Then she goes to Alaric to tell him that she somehow remembers the events of the last few days, but is lying to Landon about Seylah’s sacrifice. And there’s one more thing: Hope has the urn, which starts glowing as soon as she pulls it out.
