“Legacies” Recap: Day of the Dead
As much as I’m enjoying “Legacies,” my sole complaint with the season so far is that Hope hasn’t had enough chance to shine as a character. Thankfully, “Death Keeps Knocking On My Door” solves that problem, giving us a Hope-central hour that advances the storyline along in a shocking way.
Back from the Dead | Much like last week, this episode opens with another dead character showing up at the school’s front door- in this case, Rafael’s dead girlfriend, Cassie. After Alaric explains to her that she’s dead, Cassie immediately blames Rafael for her death and angrily insists that he’s lying about the day she died, which is just plain emotionally abusive. Even though it turns out that Rafael and Cassie did have a fight moments before she died, it’s still cold as ice to call him a “murderer” as Cassie does. But later, Cassie tells him that she forgives him and only wanted him to be honest with himself??? Not buying it!

Alone in the Dark | But no matter, as Hope finally gets a chance to take the reigns of the season, especially since Josie and Lizzie are nowhere to be found this week. Hope talks to the Necromancer against Alaric’s wishes and he is furious to find out that all traces of his existence are gone. He also claims that Malivore will make him at peace if he gets the knife.
Hope ropes MG into sending her inside the Necromancer’s mind and they end up in Rousseau’s in a cool “Originals” callback. But the Necromancer ditches Hope alone in a dark void and suspiciously arrives after an absence to pull her out, just in time for Alaric to find them.
Remembrance Day | After Alaric angrily chews out Hope for disobeying him, she locks him in his office and confronts the Necromancer one last time. In a shocking twist, turns out he deliberately left Hope in the void to possess Cassie to take the knife and return it to Malivore, destroying Cassie in the process. He says that the knife is one of three keys to unlock Malivore and once all three are in place, doomsday. Before vanishing, he tells Hope that Klaus died with love in his heart, but will not know peace until she does.
Meanwhile, Kaleb convinces MG to feed on human blood and MG takes it a little too far. They get caught by Dorian, who for some reason, only locks up MG and just yells at Kaleb for influencing him. Dorian also mentions that Stefan Salvatore killed his family and he takes one day off a year to remember them. As Hope writes a letter to Klaus for Remembrance Day, her bracelet that alerts her to Landon’s whereabouts goes off, meaning that he’s in trouble.
“Legacies” returns Thursday, January 24 on The CW.
