This week’s “Legacies” has emotion, romance and a familiar face from the past in a solid episode with a fairly out of place final moment, but it doesn’t detract from a great hour, “Mombie Dearest.” It’s Josie and Lizzie’s sixteenth birthday and Alaric receives an unexpected visit from his long dead ex, Josette. Penelope’s plot to make Lizzie miserable is set into motion.
Today of All Days | Opening this week is Alaric talking to Caroline on the phone as she is forced to cancel her appearance at Josie and Lizzie’s birthday- are we ever going to see Candice on this show?- and Alaric says something about not telling the girls why she’s gone. Right then, Josette, Alaric’s deceased fiancee from “The Vampire Diaries,” walks into his office. Soon after, Josie and Lizzie enter and quickly find out that Josette is their biological mother.

Escorts | But enough of that, time for some romance drama! As Rafael is practicing his dance moves with Hope, Penelope casts a boundary spell on the room they’re in, trapping them until the birthday party in a plot to get MG to step up and win Lizzie’s heart. Come party time, exactly that happens and Lizzie actually has fun with MG, until the boundary spell wears off and Rafael takes over, much to MG’s heartbreak. And to add insult to injury, Rafael coldly breaks up with Lizzie, still feeling a pang of guilt over his girlfriend’s death.
Zombieland | Meanwhile, Josie tries to bond with Josette, but Josette is mysteriously taken over by something and buries her alive in the cemetery. When Hope, MG and Penelope go to rescue her, more zombies pop out from the ground, which is exactly why a school shouldn’t have a cemetery. They save Josie, who ends up kissing Penelope despite telling her that she hates her.
Later, Josette tells Alaric to have the twins siphon the magic that’s keeping her alive out of her to save them. She also mentions that something will happen to the girls when they turn 22 and this is why Caroline is gone for so long. Well, that’s not fair! They’re obviously not turning 22 this season! We may never know! After a tearful goodbye, the girls take the magic away from Josette and she fades away. As Alaric and Dorian erect a tombstone for her, an incredibly odd duck calling himself the Necromancer pops up and demands the knife. Alaric responds by knocking the dude out, which is not surprising because this guy is about as threatening as a jar of pickles.
