Well, here we go! After a long wait, The Last of Us is back for season two on HBO! You know what that means: Trauma, horror and tragedy galore! This season, Ellie and Joel’s relationship is on the rocks, Ellie makes a new friend and a new enemy reveals itself in a very unsettling fashion…
Revenge is Coming | Picking up at the immediate aftermath of the last moments of season one, Joel (Pedro Pascal) lies to Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and says that he was telling the truth about the Fireflies. Once again, she says, “Okay,” and they head on their way. Back outside the hospital where the massacre took place, a group of people are mourning the fallen Fireflies. One of them, Abby, (Kaitlyn Dever) is hellbent on finding Joel and says to the others that they will find him and kill him. After a moment, she adds this: “Slowly. We kill him slowly.”
5 years later in Jackson, Wyoming, Ellie, now sporting a tattoo, is fighting with a big man as someone named Jesse (Young Manzino) watches. He reveals that he told the guy she was fighting to pull his punches, but Ellie warns him to never do that again. Elsewhere, Joel is fixing a circuit board and is joined by Dina (Isabella Merced) who wants to know why Ellie is angry at him. Joel says that he can’t hold himself responsible for how she feels, causing Dina to ask if he’s seeing Gail for therapy.
Letting it Out | Ellie is practicing shooting clickers with Tommy (Gabriel Luna) when Tommy relegates her to watching the gate. Ellie protests, saying that she’s an adult, and Tommy relents and allows her on a patrol with him. As more and more survivors arrive at the Wyoming fort, Maria (Rutina Wesley) tells Joel that they’re running out of room for these people. Tommy arrives and lies to Joel that he’s going out alone, while Joel goes to a cabin where Gail (Catherine O’Hara) is waiting for his therapy session.

Joel vents about how Ellie has been ignoring him, but Gail calls him out for lying to her. She tells him that she knows that he shot and killed her husband, Eugene, even though he had no choice, and is still angry at him, but wants to make things right. She begs Joel to admit what he did, and he starts to cry and simply says, “I saved her,” before leaving.
Ellie is cleaning her gun in the garage where she is living, when Dina arrives to pick her up for the patrol. Ellie, Dina and three other people on horseback are sent out into the wild by Jesse, and while they ride out, Dina offers to take Ellie to the New Year’s Eve party in the evening. The patrol group sees blood in the snow and Ellie and Dina break off from the group to investigate. They arrive at an abandoned town, where they see dead clickers and a bear’s corpse. Ellie and Dina head into an empty supermarket to see if there are any survivors, but hear the screams of infected inside.
Everyone is Afraid | For some dumb reason, they go inside to kill the infected for fun. Ellie stabs a clicker in the throat until it dies, but as she and Dina are heading back, the floor beneath Ellie gives out and she falls to the floor below into the main supermarket. As she is exploring, an infected follows her and attacks her, biting her in the side before she shoots it. After they get back, Ellie and Dina are summoned to see Tommy and Maria along with a board of people and Ellie tells them that the infected was smart and following her carefully. Afterwards, Ellie cuts at her wound with a knife to cover up the bite marks.
Joel visits Ellie in her garage and offers to restring her guitar for her. At the town’s New Year’s Eve party, Ellie shares a tender dance with Dina which leads to a kiss. Unfortunately, an older man sees them and calls them dykes, but before Ellie can respond, Joel knocks the man to the ground and tells him to leave. Ellie then snaps at Joel and tells him that she doesn’t need his help. After the party, as Ellie is walking home, she sees Joel playing guitar on the porch, but walks by him without a word. In the mountains above the town, Abby and her crew arrive with guns and see the lights below.
