“Killjoys” Recap: The Unseeing

In the previous episode of Killjoys, Johnny (Aaron Ashmore) was finally reunited with Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) and D’avin (Luke Macfarlane) after getting to the bottom of the Clara mystery. How will Team Awesomesauce do now that they’re all back together, with the addition of a new nerd? “The Hullen Have Eyes” was written by Adam Barken and directed by Ruba Nadda, and here is what went down!

“Bitch is gonna bitch.” | Johnny meet with Banyon Grey (Karen LeBlanc) to get reinstated with the RAC, and his superior questions him about Dutch’s involvement in the disappearances.

Dutch et al decide to start calling the missing RAC agents “cleansed” since they are no longer Hullen. They show Johnny the Hullen ships and introduce him to Zeph (Kelly McCormack), who informs them that she ship has been moved in the last 72 hours. Johnny doesn’t believe her, but she proves to be the smarter nerd in this instance and Johnny is not happy about it. Johnny’s displeasure with her only increases when she’s the one who figures out how to open the ship. Once aboard, they search it to make sure it’s empty before checking out its flight plans. They decide to travel to its previous destination to figure out what they are being used for.

They land in a frozen wasteland with high amounts of radiation, proving Zeph’s theory about the ship being moved correct. The nerds stay on the ship while Dutch and D’avin go exploring. They come across an “old timey” village that they soon realize was used as a Hullen training center where the Hullen could learn how to pass as human. An alarm goes off and a solar flare occurs, blinding them. While the flare is occurring they get attacked and stripped of their weapons. They run inside a house and are greeted by a girl named Quin (Sara Waisglass) with a veil over her eyes who leads them to safety. They remove the veil from Quin’s eyes to reveal they have been sewn shut, but according to her it is a blessing. Then they get attacked.

During the solar flare, the ship containing Johnny and Zeph decided it didn’t want to be there anymore and moved them into orbit. Zeph fears for her life, and Johnny finally puts his mentor pants on and reminds her that she’s a nerd and nerds save the day. Eventually the ship decides to return to the ground, but when Johnny gets off he is greeted by a weapon in his face. He calls for Zeph to slowly come down, but instead she decides she needs to test a theory and leaves Johnny behind to get captured.

“Rejoice! The Undying have returned!” | Dutch, D’avin, and Johnny are all in a cell when a blind man named Yarin (David Collins) greets them, telling them they have been waiting for a long time for them. Yarin says he speaks for The Unseeing and asks if they are the Undying, to which Dutch replies they are. Yarin takes them to a celebration in their honor, and on the way tells them of the solar flares and how they’ve blinded them and forced them to move underground. At the celebration the are greeted by the rest of The Unseeing and meet The Last Seer (Aidan Devine). He doesn’t believe Dutch and her crew are really The Undying and when he gets Dutch alone we find out the truth.

The Last Seer is actually Hullen, and explains how his people left 30 years ago at the instruction of Khlyen (Rob Stewart) and left him behind to deal with the slaves. They took the shields protecting them from the sun when they went, causing the slaves to go blind. The Last Seer got his title because he is Hullen and unharmed by the suns flares, and the Unseeing created the religion themselves, he decided to let them believe in it and sew children’s eyes closed than tell them the truth. But when Dutch reveals Khlyen is dead, we see The Lase Seer become very upset on behalf of The Unseeing and Dutch realizes he has been cleansed.

John and D’avin ask Quin for help to find something called the remnant, which was left behind by Khlyen. She figures out where it is and leads them to it.

An alarm goes off saying The Undying have returned, causing everyone to go above ground to see what’s going on. Zeph returns just as another flare hits and rescues her crew. Johnny wants to know how she figures out how to fly the ship. She said Dutch was the one to touch the controls to make them work the first time, so she just used her residual DNA to do it again. It is obvious Johnny is slightly impressed by Zeph’s work, but he’s much more upset that she abandoned them to test out a theory. He explains to her that protecting the team is her number one priority, but then does a very un-Johnny-like thing and gives her the remnant. He acknowledges that she may be better suited at cracking it than he is.

Dutch gathers everyone and tells them it wasn’t her DNA on those controls. She nudged D’avin’s hand into them. He is in control of the fleet, which makes sense since Quin revealed to him that he was the one who flew the ship there 3 days prior.

“Queens rise.” | Somewhere in the galaxy, the Hullen Armada is floating through space looking as intimidating as ever. Delle Seyah (Mayko Nguyen) is being escorted by Gander (Ted Atherton) to see Aneela (Hannah John-Kamen), but it is obvious the two loathe each other. Aneela takes Delle Seyah into her war room and explains to her that there are two strains of Hullen: Those who were made to take orders and those who were born to give them, and she made sure Delle Seyah was on her side. She also reveals that there are a crap ton of Hullen. Delle Seyah is the one to deliver the news of Khlyen’s death to Aneela, who definitely doesn’t take it well. She murders most of the servants in the room, and Gander forces Delle Seyah to clean it.

Once she has finished cleaning the blood, Delle Seyah goes to Aneela, and Aneela reminds her that she is a woman of power, and together they will do great things because “queens rise.”
