This is it, the moment Killjoys fans have been waiting for! The season 2 finale of the popular Syfy show is picking up where episode 209 left off. John (Aaron Ashmore) is grieving Pawter’s death, Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) wants to kill Anela, and Fancy (Sean Baek) is aboard Lucy to take them to Khlyen (Rob Stewart). Here is the recap of the Killjoys season 2 finale.
“When the nights were long and the days were deep, there lived a girl.” | The episode begins with a flashback of a young Dutch with Khlyen, it shows some of their history along with Anela’s story. Khlyen recounts how he found the plasma on Arkyn centuries ago, and he discovered how it bonded with a tree to keep it alive. In the flashback he tells Dutch she must remember this story, because, “This is how it all began.”
“Grieving is for winners, and we haven’t won yet.” | John and Dutch have a drink and talk about how John is doing. He says he had finally started to believe he could actually be happy with Pawter, and when Dutch tempts him with an offer to leave The Quad he is tempted to take it. But John knows he must finish what he started with Pawter.
“All of us, together. One glorious suicide mission. Who’s in?” | Khlyen follows Level 6’s aboard Lucy, then shoots them with darts that kill them. He says he has developed a toxin that can be used to save The Quad, but they all have to work together.
“Why do you want me to kill your daughter?” | Dutch questions Khlyen about Anela, she wants to know why she has to kill her. He says it might be necessary one day, especially if Anela were to find out about her. He talks more about the change to becoming a Level 6, and how there are no adolescent 6’s because their brains can’t handle it. Anela was too young when the plasma was introduced into her system so it drove her insane. Dutch also wants to know why she looks like Anela, but that is just as much a mystery to Khlyen as it is to her. Then she asks Khlyen what he is trying to save The Quad from, and he tells them all about the invasive neuro parasite the plasma contains. The parasite is sentient, rendering its host sentient as well. Level 6’s are no longer 100% human. He goes into details about the history of the parasitic race (called Hullan) and their relationship with The Nine, how The Nine are silently letting the Hullan invade. The only reason the parasitic race is interested in The Quad is because of the plasma, if the killjoys can destroy that with Khlyen’s toxin then they can stop them from making 6’s and taking over. They set course for Arkyn, but quickly notice Arkyn is surrounded by The Black Root. That is when Khlyen reveals the plasma has a strong bond with its parent source. If they can poison the parent source then the spawn will die too. He knows of one last pure source of plasma outside of Arkyn, the Scarback’s ancient Mother Tree.
Dutch goes to Alvis (Morgan Kelly) to try to locate the tree, but he doesn’t know where it is. They look through the book of Scarback Scriptures to find any information, and Dutch realizes the book contains a map to where the tree is.
“This is a classic killjoys mission. Get in. Get dirty. Get out.” | The tree is on Archive, a high-security storage facility used by those with great wealth. They don’t let just anyone in there, and Dutch is going to be their trick for getting in: she is a runaway queen.
Delle Seyah (Mayko Nguyen) receives a video call from Khlyen, informing her that his people are on their way. She must do one last favor for him, take care of Dutch and her team.
“This is not my kind of hot boxing.” | Dutch and Khlyen make it through security with help from John and Lucy, and make it into Anela’s vault to find the Mother Tree. Unfortunately, they have tripped a security feature, opening a window that shows they’re right next to a sun and its burning the tree. It will kill them if they don’t stop it, and fast! Khlyen tells Dutch to take the toxin he created, just in case they fail. He manages to buy them more time by closing the window, and Dutch pours the toxin into the tree’s pool of plasma. “Suck on this, you little green bitches!”, but for some reason, the toxin doesn’t work.
“I’d rather not waste my heroic moment, if you don’t mind.” | Lucy reveals the black plasma John collected earlier acts as a catalyst for Khlyen’s toxin, meaning they have to poison a 6 then use them to poison the plasma pool. Khlyen immediately volunteers to kill himself for it. Dutch tries to stop him, but he reveals Anela is already on her way to Dutch, unless he can save The Quad and take away what she’s interested in. Khlyen explains what went wrong with Anela. The first humans to pair with the plasma did not have perfect pairing and were able to keep a sense of themselves, but Anela and others used Red 17 to perfect the pairings and turn the infected into slaves. He believes Dutch was her chance to right what he did wrong with Anela. He wanted to train her to survive the pairing with the plasma in order to save her from Anela. He injects himself with the toxin and slits his wrist. Dutch helps him get the black plasma into the pool, and holds him while he apologizes. He said he did everything he did to protect and prepare her. He dies in her arms as all the plasma on Arkyn dies. We see Fancy collapse, then cut his palm and see that he is bleeding. It worked, the plasma has been destroyed.
“Technology is a disloyal bitch, kinda like you.” | The killjoys go to Pree’s bar in Old Town to celebrate their victory. While there, John sneaks away to surprise Delle Seyah. Remember when she was chatting with Khlyen earlier? Turns out that was actually John, he tricked her into meeting him in an alley. She continues to threaten him, and he shoots her in the stomach. “Just so you know, that isn’t for all the people you killed. Or the millions more you would enslave if you had another chance. I am not a hero. I just loved her.” He walks away, leaving Delle Seyah to suffer alone in the alley.
“You’ve gotta let me go, girl.” | The last time we see John this season it is when he is saying a difficult goodbye to Lucy, leaving his friends behind and running from what he did. As John is leaving he runs into his old pal Clara (Stephanie Leonidas), turns out Lucy called her to go along with John on his journey. They exit Lucy and board Khlyen’s ship, they’re going to steal it since Khlyen will no longer be needing it.
“I don’t want to win just one battle, I want a whole bloody war. Who’s in?” | The final scene shows Fancy reuniting with Dutch and D’avin, completely human. All the Level 6’s made with Arkyn plasma have been cured. Dutch knows Anela was not one of the humans cured, so she decides she wants to destroy all the plasma.
Holy cow, what an amazing finale! We have finally learned the truth about Khlyen, Anela is still out there, and John is on the run for the possible murder of Delle Seyah Kendry. What did you think of the finale? Leave your comments below letting us know what you want to see in season 3!
