Our favorite bounty hunters are back this week in episode 8 of season 2 of Killjoys on Syfy. This week our heroes dealt with the information they found out in last weeks episode. Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) must learn more about Anela if she is going to carry out what Khlyen (Rob Stewart) wants her to do. John (Aaron Ashmore) is still trapped by Jelco (Pascal Langdale) in the Springhill Compound, beaten and trapped. Here is a recap of what happened tonight in “Full Metal Monk.”
“You’re my thing, Johnny.” | The episode opens with Dutch in Jelco’s office speaking to John, who is still caged. John says they both have their own things now, and that he is in love with Pawter (Sarah Power). Dutch leaves John locked in the cage, saying Pawter will get him. When he asks why she came, she admits it was out of habit.
“Team Awesome Force, you are an awesome force.” | When we first catch up with D’avin (Luke Macfarlane) we find him in Old Town with Turin (Patrick Garrow), reporting all the information he gained from Sabine (Tori Anderson) about Level 6’s. The pair is following Hoolian Ducat (Patrick Kerton); Sabine identified Ducat as a Level 6, but Turin doesn’t want to believe it. That is, until Ducat ambushes them and tries to kill D’avin. While Ducat was strangling D’avin his eyes began to swell, then exploded all over D’avin’s face.
“Much obliged, shit bag.” | When Pawter arrives at Jelco’s to rescue John she uses the power of The Nine to threaten Jelco for what he’s done. Jelco releases John, but tells his workers to call Seyah Kendry (Mayko Nguyen), another member of The Nine.
“Let’s find Anela.” | Dutch catches D’avin up on the drama between her and John and how they are temporarily not working together. The two of them argue about various things, including Khlyen, Anela, and Red 17. Dutch asks D’avin to make a choice: work with her or work with John. Even though John is his brother, he also lied to D’avin and that pushes D’avin to pick Dutch as his partner.
Back in Old Town, Pawter thinks she may know why the wall is up: extermination eugenics. She believes The Company is treating the people of Old Town like animals; infecting the weak and keeping the strong. She thinks the contaminant is already in Old Town and wants to test the soil, air, water, and even peoples blood for traces of it.
“They want to know what The Wall is for, show them.” | Jelco discusses Pawter and John’s quest to free Old Town with Seyah Kendry. They agree that John and Pawter are a problem that needs to be taken care of, so Jelco activates The Wall. It shows up in Old Town as a translucent barrier that keeps people from leaving.
“I just get the best assignments.” | Dutch and D’avin visit Alvis (Morgan Kelly) and Olan (Ricardo Hoyos) about an incident that occurred the night before between Olan and his brother. When they tell Olan about Anela he begins to freak out and call her “devil” in Old Word. Then he begins drawing ancient symbols on the walls, saying it’s a map of rivers on Arkyn from hundreds of years earlier. Alvis explains that hundreds of years earlier 12 Scarback monks went to Arkyn to fight the devil, and the group suddenly realizes what they must do next. Time to follow that map.
“This whole place is one big prison. Find me one jail where guards don’t smuggle in contraband.” | Pawter explains to John that Arune Hyponia (Shamier Anderson) is the only member of The Nine willing to help her, but she needs proof that The Company is up to something. After they test their samples they come up with nothing. While talking with Pree (Thom Allison) they make an astonishing discovery; no one in Old Town is losing weight, even though they have no access to food. Pree points out that guards are usually willing to trade, bring in contraband for something in return. Pawter hypothesizes that the poison is in the food coming from The Company, and that the guards are the ones bringing it in.
“Monk me up a bit.” | D’avin, Dutch and Alvis travel to Arkyn. Along the journey D’avin asks Alvis for help learning to control the green plasma. Alvis believes D’avin may be able to manifest his desires into reality and suggests he stop wishing death upon people. When they land on Arkyn they immediately find another one of Khlyen’s safe houses, only this one is different. It’s an elevator that takes them deep down into Arkyn, into an abandoned lab.
Pawter and John track down a company guard named Carl (Jameson Kraemer) that will trade for contraband, but are disappointed when the food tests negative for any contaminants. Carl then mentions there will be special rations coming in from The Company soon.
On Arkyn, D’avin finds a room full of bodies hooked up to machines and all appear to have been experimented on. He notices that one of the bodies has a stint in its neck similar to one he had used on him by Red 17. They conclude that the bodies are still intact and even warm because the plasma preserves them. He and Dutch come across some formulas possibly explaining the experiments they were performing. Suddenly they hear Alvis speaking to someone in another room and go to investigate. Alvis has found the only monk alive of the original 12 that went to Arkyn hundreds of years prior, and he is in a fugue state. The monk is being kept behind a force field looking eerily similar to The Wall in Old Town, only a more primitive version. Dutch shoots the controls to short out the force field and free the monk.
“You make me so happy, I could die.” | Pawter and John go to Pawter’s old “office” in the back of Pree’s bar, it is there that Pawter proposes a plan to get the evidence they need. They start to become more distracted and increasingly happy. Pawter realizes she should not be feeling this happy with everything that’s going on, but instead of trying to figure out why, she just starts laughing. She looks at John and they finally exchange “I love you”s.
“The Scarbacks didn’t come to fight the devil, they came to fight her.” | Alvis tries to communicate with the old monk by speaking to him in Old Word, but as soon as he sees Dutch he begins to struggle and shout. He believes Dutch is Anela and wants to kill her before she kills him. While trying to get answers the monk attacks Dutch and D’avin is forced to step in and try to control the plasma that is inside the monk to calm him down. It begins to work, but suddenly the monk lunges towards Dutch again so she knocks him out.
“Are you high?” | Arune Hyponia visits Pawter and John, seeking the evidence Pawter promised him. He quickly realizes that the pair are acting very strange, but they tell him they haven’t taken any drugs though they both admit to feeling high. They tell Arune they know where the poison is, but they don’t yet have evidence to prove it. Jelco enters the room with an amused grin, he seems to be pleased by what is going on.
“He’s the god damn center of gravity, he can do this.” | Back on Arkyn Dutch and her group have the monk strapped down and are trying to get answers out of him. The monk refuses to speak so D’avin decides to try controlling the plasma inside him once again; it begins working. Alvis is able to translate for Dutch and tells the monk that she is not Anela, but the monk does not believe her. He welcomes her back and expects to be killed by her now. Dutch cuts her palm and shows him that she does not heal to prove once and for all that she is not Anela, he asks who sent her. She responds by showing him a picture and saying it was Khlyen. The monk recognizes Khlyen, but says that Anela called him father. Dutch is very shaken by the realization that Khlyen is Anela’s dad, but does not have much time to dwell on it yet because the monk asks her to kill him. He is ready to die. She asks him for forgiveness but he denies it, then she kills him. This makes two mercy kills she has had to make in two episodes.
“We’re gonna save Old Town.” | Inside Pawter’s old office Jelco has pulled a gun on Arune and admitted to drugging the people in Old Town. He reveals there is a way to be there and not be effected by the drug, and it’s a patch of some sort that goes behind the ear. Jelco wants to see how much he can manipulate John and Pawter while they are in this condition, so he shoots Arune and gives Pawter the gun. He then positions John and Pawter in front of Arune’s body for a photo that he plans to show the rest of The Nine, but while he is doing that he is also confirming their theory about the poison being in the food. Jelco leaves and the pair are left alone with Arune’s body, but they are too strung out to notice or care.
“What if I’m her?” | Back on the ship, Dutch and D’avin reflect on what happened on Arkyn. Dutch is afraid that she is Anela, and begins to question her childhood and memories. Luckily D’avin is there to calm her down and talk some sense into her. He quickly changes the subject to The Wall in Old Town and the similarities it has to the one in the lab on Arkyn. It is essentially the same barrier and is designed to kill fear as well as trigger euphoria. This turns everyone inside in into helpless, happy zombies. They suddenly realize John must be in Old Town.
“Let’s put an end to Old Town suffering, and build a new future together.” | The end of the episode takes us back to Old Town where we see John look at his phone when Dutch is calling, and then throw it. There is chaos in the streets, one man even jumped off a roof! There is an announcement that begins to play as John and Pawter walk along the streets. It says that The Company will be bringing rations into Old Town to end hunger. John and Pawter know the rations are poisoned, but the drug still has a hold on them so they do nothing.
