Killjoys Recap: Heart-Shaped Box

Our trio of bounty hunters are back in episode 7 of season two of Syfy’s Killjoys. Our heroes are trying to save Sabine (Tori Anderson)’s life after sex with D’avin (Luke Macfarlane) took a dark turn. They discover a secret about her that could lead to heartbreak for D’avin and possible death for the Killjoys. They also discover more about Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen)’s past, and John gets himself into a situation. Here is a recap of what happened in “Heart-Shaped Box.”

“Why did you bring me Sabine in a bag?” | The beginning of the episode shows John (Aaron Ashmore) helping D’avin with the Sabine situation. She is not dead and they realize she must be a Level 6. They put her in a duffel bag and bring her to Dutch while she’s still unconscious. After running some tests it is determined Sabine was somehow weakened during sex with D’avin. Dutch also discovers Sabine’s real name is Jenny Avery and she is 89 years old.

“We’re soldiers working for the true purpose of The RAC.” | John wakes Sabine up by injecting her heart with epinephrine, and Dutch begins to interrogate and torture her. Sabine tells them that Khlyne (Rob Stewart) sent her to watch D’avin and protect them from Dutch. D’avin wants to enlist in Turin (Patrick Garrow) for help.

“The eyes don’t lie.” | The Killjoys bring Sabine to Turin to learn more about Level 6’s. Turin has a device that can act as a lie detector on them; a special pair of glasses containing a retinal scanner to detect retinal reactions to images, making lying impossible. They can show images of suspected 6’s to Sabine and record her retinal response, confirming if they are a 6 or not. Sabine gets attacked by Turin’s assistant who uses a weapon called a Dread Knot, so she rips his head off. This  reveals that he was also a Level 6. Sabine explains to them the only way to kill a Level 6 is by sudden brain death. Turin decides he needs to lay low and won’t keep Sabine for fear of the Black Root showing up. The Black Root are the police of the Level 6’s, and Turin is afraid to meet them.

“We’re at war.” | Dutch tells D’avin she wants to kill Sabine once they get the information they need. Once she is fully recovered she would come after them.

“Engineered psychopaths.” | John analyzed Sabine’s brain scans and made an incredible discovery. He uncovered what makes a Level 6. There is an infection in the brain that shuts down the ability to love, create bonds, and feel empathy. Sex with D’avin temporarily pumped the infection out of Sabine, but it is now returning. The Sabine they see now is the Sabine she was before becoming a Level 6, but it is only temporary.

“I’m not anybody’s puppet.” | Sabine gives Dutch some inside information about becoming a 6; most people go crazy and don’t make the transition, it damages you and makes you antisocial. She tells Dutch she will help them identify all the Level 6’s she knows in exchange for her freedom. Dutch agreed to this.

John is next seen requesting a solitary warrant against Artura Senbek, and he does not want D’avin and Dutch to find out. Bellus reminded him what happened the last time he took a solo warrant and tells him that they deserve better than him.

“Whatever I’m feeling, it’s the last real emotion I’m gonna feel for anyone.” | D’avin and Sabine get into a tub of water and use the plasma to connect their minds. They use the retinal scanner to identify Level 6’s, but Dutch still does not trust Sabine. To check the validity of Sabine’s information Dutch and John go to a bar filled with Level 6’s to mark them with trackers for later. Meanwhile, Sabine tries to persuade D’avin to sleep with her again before she goes back to feeling no emotional bonds. He turns her down, but agrees to help get her drunk and have a good night.

Back to John, he cornered Artura and threatened her with the warrant if she wouldn’t help him bring down The Wall. She tells him about a place called Greenwell, where they slaughtered innocent people. She was sent to Old Town for asking too many questions. She also tells him the controls for The Wall are in Jelco (Pascal Langdale)’s office in Springhill.

“Just tell me you’ll miss me.” | Sabine just wants to matter to someone before she’s gone, and she can already feel herself slipping away. She tells D’avin not to watch when Dutch kills her, because she knows it will come to that.

“Nice stick, I’ve had bigger.” | Dutch is searching Sabine’s apartment when she is ambushed by a member of Black Root. He says he is there for Sabine, he wants to be lead to Khlyen. Back on the ship, D’avin told Dutch he let Sabine go and Dutch was not happy. She explained to him what she discovered; Sabine was not sent by Khlyen, she was sent by the Black Root to find Khlyen then kill them. D’avin reveals that he placed a tracker on Sabine so that Dutch could find and kill her, he just wanted her to be free one last time.

John goes to Springhill Compound, breaks into Jelco’s office, and finds Artura tied up and beat on the other side. She warned Jelco John was coming. Jelco entered the room and hits Artura.

“You’re already half  6 and you don’t even know it.”|  Dutch goes to Leith to track down Sabine. Sabine explained to her that she was trying to find one of Khlyen’s safe houses, she wants help and he is different. Sabine reveals that something about Dutch made Khlyen rebel and want to protect her. She explained that Khlyen trained her to survive the transition to Level 6. She accuses Dutch of using the Jaqobis’ brothers because they feel so much emotion. After realizing what she said she apologizes and warns that this is her almost back to Level 6. Sabine lowers down onto her knees and begs Dutch to kill her. Dutch does.

John is bloodied and bruised and locked in a cage in Springhill Compound.

“What if it’s her?” | Dutch found the safe house Sabine was looking for, inside were a mix of weapons and  little girls’ belongings. She then saw a red box and knew it was for her. Upon her return to the ship she explained what occurred with Sabine to D’avin. D’avin knows the red box means that Dutch has received another kill job. The name in the box is one Dutch suspects is the other her D’avin saw on Arkyn. Khlyen wants Dutch to find her and kill her.
