“iZombie” Recap: Feel Like I’m Livin’ A Teenage Dream

There’s nothing quite like the dynamic between father and daughter and that is exactly what Liv and Major play with this week on iZombie. To solve a double homicide, they must journey to opposite sides of the suburban family spectrum and it leads to hilarity as expected. Elsewhere, Clive takes a trip down memory lane to when he first met Wally and his mother while trying to keep Detective Cavanaugh in the dark about the true motive behind their murders. “Zombie Knows Best” was written by Diane Ruggiero-Wright and directed by Jason Bloom. Here’s what went down.

“THANKS DAD BRAIN”| A new case rolls in and it is a father daughter duo killed in a not-so-accidental car crash. Thinking that the high powered banker father is the likely intended victim, Liv (Rose McIver) eats his brains, leaving Major (Robert Buckley) with a teenage girl brain chili dog. Both brains kick in full force with Liv being drawn to fixing things and attitudes and Major singing Katy Perry (a thing I didn’t know I needed until now) and giving ‘real talk’ to Ravi (Rahul Kohli) about his Peyton woes. Clive (Malcolm Goodwin) and Liv strike out with the bank and they think they are back to square one until Major, in a fit of teenage self-consciousness at mercenary practice…err…training, has a vision of the daughter, Cindy, showing something to her dad on her phone that had him ready to go to the police but Cindy insists that a “Winslow” will never forgive her if they do.  They call upon IT Darkness to see if he can get anything off of Cindy’s demolished cell phone but aren’t hopeful. They track down Cindy’s friend, Winslow, to see if she will shed some light on the subject but she isn’t talking. Luckily, Teen Major triggers a vision in Dad Liv where she sees the father daughter fight from a new angle and reveals the picture on Cindy’s phone was a selfie of Winslow in bed with a much older man. The mystery of who the sexual predator is doesn’t last long because the man arrives to pick Winslow up, being her step-father and all. Liv fills the other two in and they agree they need to get concrete evidence to put this guy away and solve Cindy and her father’s murders. They pay a visit to step-dad Ken at work but are interrupted by his wife Tori (guest star Sally Pressman) with Winslow in tow. They serve a warrant for Winslow’s phone and set to figuring out who knew what. Before they can get any evidence that will stick, Tori and Winslow turn up at the station to tell them that Ken has run off and point a finger at him for the murders. Tori confessed to her mother about the affair but is adamant that she didn’t tell Ken that Cindy and her dad were going to the police. IT Darkness arrives at that moment to blow the case open because he found parental control spy software on Winslow’s phone that secretly copied and sent everything straight to her mother. She knew all about the affair and that Cindy and her dad were going to the police and took matters into her own hands to stop them. Clive arrests her and when he gets a call that Ken has turned up at a gas station trying to leave town, finds and arrests him for statutory rape.

ZOMBIES NEXT DOOR | Even though Detective Cavanaugh (guest star Robert Salvador) is in charge of Wally (guest star Mateo Mingo) and his family’s murder case, Clive and Liv continue to do their own investigation in secret with the knowledge that the victims were zombies. They try to steer Cavanaugh away from the zombie angle while trying to figure out who knew the truth about the zombies and would shoot them execution style like that. They conduct their own interviews at Filmore Graves and Wally’s teacher confides in them that all of her students are scared of the humans hunting them down. It doesn’t help that the Chuck Bird show is now full on the zombie hunt with all sorts of callers chiming in about killing them. Ravi agrees to go through show recordings to see if they can find any leads and finds one in particular from a man who found some Brain Gogurt tubes (Filmore Graves’ solution to visions) in his neighbor’s trash cans. Clive tracks down the caller’s info and learns he was next door neighbors to Wally’s family. He and Liv pay the man a visit and while he has an alibi, someone on the zombie-killing message board he posts too, knew his address and about his zombie neighbors. They take the message board information to Vivian (guest star Andrea Savage) where she laments that they thought they had more time before the public learned of their existence.

DOMESTIC CLIVE | While Cavanaugh is sifting through Wally and his family’s past to piece together evidence about their murder, he learns that Clive was very close with Wally and his mom, Anna (guest star Caitlin Stryker), years ago. Clive relives those days through flashbacks starting with the first time he met Wally. He lived across the hall from them and one night hears Wally’s father screaming at his wife and son and hears the sounds of blows. He rushes over and arrests the husband. Sometime later, Anna needs someone to watch Wally while she is at work and turns to the nice police officer who saved them. Clive doesn’t know what to do with a kid but agrees. Even though he fails epically (yeah maybe don’t let a child watch Game of Thrones, hand goggles or not), Anna sees how much he cares and he becomes a part of their family, from hanging out to cooking family dinners. One night, Anna tells him that her brother is coming home from overseas and she is thinking of taking Wally to go live with him because her ex-husband will be getting released soon and she fears for their safety. Clive tries to convince her he can protect them but right before the ex-husband is set to be released, Clive has to go deep undercover for work and by the time he reappears, Anna and Wally have moved away. That is the last he hears from them until he runs into Wally at Filmore Graves, except for a single letter she writes him about a week before she becomes a zombie.

OTHER THOUGHTS:
• As a former swimmer, that 4am practice trek is RELATABLE.
• Wally being the one to introduce Clive to Game of Thrones turned a funny ongoing joke into a feelings punch.
• Line of the Night goes to Dad Liv for her, “I don’t think Miley Perry Gomez wants her fans going deaf.”

So what did you think? Is the message board of wannabe zombie killers hiding the real murderer? Will they be able to keep Cavanaugh in the dark? What will Vivian do now that her timetable for zombie reveal has been moved up? Let us know your theories in the comments below!
