“Shadow Hawk Takes Flight” is a decidedly weird premise for a superhero series: How often do superheroes end up in a mental hospital? The odds were incredibly stacked against Danny here. Even his false passport that he used to get back into the country works against him as it’s used as evidence that he’s crazy.
Joy was understandably a bit wary of the decision to have Danny committed, while Ward stubbornly stuck to his guns. Danny managed to prove his identity in a convoluted scheme involving M&Ms and Colleen sneaking them out of the hospital. While you’re at it, Danny, why not send for help?
The episode also gave us our first, albeit brief, look at the Iron Fist as Danny used his power to escape. Also, Danny is apparently the only person who can stop the Hand, which would make the other Defenders a little useless.
“Shadow Hawk Takes Flight” further stringed along the season at a slower pace, dishing out a few elements of backstory, but not elaborating on the whole picture. While it was a detour, it managed to work in the world of the show.
Iron Fist is available to stream on Netflix.
