“Iron Fist” Episode Review: I Am Danny Rand

Marvel and Netflix kick off their latest collaboration with “Snow Gives Way,” in which Danny Rand reemerges after a long and mysterious absence to reclaim his company, which doesn’t sit well with the Meachums, who have been running Rand Enterprises for the last 15 years.

“Iron Fist” certainly wastes no time getting started, as the memorable opener immediately establishes Danny and his dilemma when he waltzes into the front door of Rand Enterprises and takes out a few security guards to get to the top floor to meet the Meachums. Naturally, Ward and Joy have serious questions about Danny and the nature of his sudden appearance, but rather than explain his past like a normal person, Danny is quite vague about his past, which doesn’t quite work out for him.

Ward is easily the most untrusting of Danny, while Joy has a bit of an open mind, which is impressive when you consider that Danny flat out breaks into her house. But don’t worry, he doesn’t hurt her dog, he just locks the dog in her study, where he has no food. By episode’s end, Joy seems to be in cahoots with Ward as she drugs Danny and they promptly send him to a mental institution.

“Snow Gives Way” was a slow burn intro that was a deviation from what Marvel fans would expect from this type of series. It has moments of charm, notably Finn Jones’s portrayal of Danny, but it may not immediately reel you in just yet. You’ll have to wait for that.

Iron Fist is available to stream on Netflix.
