Freeform’s Siren got off to a great start with last week’s two-hour premiere event. The Season 3 opener delivered much needed action (Thank you, Tia!), more crazy deaths (Thanks again, Tia) and a brand-new baddie (Yup, Tia again)! The mermaid drama gave us the engagement of one pair, the beautiful reunion of another, and a possible ending of a third. And that’s just the first two episodes.
OMFGTV got on the phone with mama in charge, Rena Owen, who plays Helen on the series, to give us a little bit of information on what’s to come. But first, we had to ask what she thought of the return of Helen’s romantic interest to Siren.

“I was over the moon!” she tells us excitedly about Hugo Ateo’s return. “I was just thrilled. We are all so happy. Our brilliant creator [Eric] Wald found a beautiful way to bring back our beloved Sarge. It’s very clever. They’re really quite ahead of the times in a lot of ways.”
Ever since that first encounter where Sarge appeared at her window and showed her a sign by dropping the necklace Helen had gifted him, she’s been desperate to reconnect. But after such a short time with the hybrid when he was, what is keeping her eager to try to reunite again?
“She’s got a lot of questions,” Owen explains. “I think she wants some answers to certain questions.” Though she did have a sort of romantic connection with Sarge, the actress says that Helen’s reasons aren’t just about that. “He did give Helen that warning about the war.”
While Ryn and her tribe prepare for battle with Tia (Tiffany Lonsdale-Hands) to save her human friends, the former Russian captive is back in the water gathering her army prepared to do what ever it takes to save the earth and restore balance of nature, nomatter who or whom gets in the way. Helen, meanwhile, who is not directly involved with the actual battle under the water, continues to do what she does in every season and what she does best — give her motherly love.
“[Helen is there to] provide a safe haven, provide shelter, provide protection [for Ryn and her clan].” As Ryn regains her strength as she practices combat with her others, Helen is there to be proactive with what she can do to help her. Owen says that in season’s first two episodes, you can see that Helen does not trust Tia. “Helen is very wary of this new mermaid. She’s definitey not Team Tia.”
Also in an effort to do all she can to help, Helen teams up with mermaid Eliza (Georgia Waters). “Eliza’s the healer, so she’s learning new remedies and medicinal practicies,” she says. “She’s tapping into the old ways, which Helen really enjoys.”
Finally, as Ryn seeks medical help, she learns the existence of her unborn child. “She goes through sort of a phantom pregnancy where she suffers the same symptoms.” And upon the knowledge of her baby, who would help save them and their tribe, she becomes deadset on finding her. And just as Tia will kill anyone in her way, Ryn’s mission to find her baby may turn out deadly.
Siren airs Thursdays at 10pm on Freeform.
