“Siren” Exclusive: Rena Owen Weighs In on the Ben, Maddie & Ryn Love Scene

In the final moments of Siren‘s series premiere, Ryn (Eline Powell) jumped into bed and sandwiched herself between her host Ben (Alex Roe) and his girlfriend Maddie (Fola Evans-Akingbola). Fans of the Freeform series quickly pointed out that that was foreshadowing a love triangle.

The first half of the second season built up on the sexual attraction between the trio — they went as far as having a steamy makeout session, which ended prematurely because the marine biologist and his mate weren’t sure if their mermaid friend was ready to take their relationship to the next level.

Alas, the spring finale of the mermaid drama finally delivered what some fans have been waiting for since the very beginning: the threesome consummated their relationship, possibly becoming television’s first polyamorous relationship between humans and a sea creature.

In our recent exclusive chat with Siren‘s Rena Owen (Helen), the actress tells us that the love scene with Ben, Maddie and Ryn was a “very bold” move, and understands why some fans just aren’t into it.

“I think it’s very bold, but that’s what Freeform is about — it’s about being bold,” Owen says.

“I also appreciate why there’s kind of a divided camp. Some people like this threesome thing and others don’t. I understand why some people aren’t digging the threesome. I just think everyone’s opinion is valid. Each to their own. ”

Though Owen wasn’t on set during the filming of that scene, she does say that it was written very well and heard that the filming of it also went very well. Personally, however, she shares that she doesn’t really have a judgement call on subject matter.

“I know the characters really love each other and this is an expression of their love or going to the next level, which Ryn wants,” Rena explains. “Ryn asks for it. She says, ‘I want more.’ There’s been clues about it dropped all along the way. I looked a lot [at the fan reactions] when they first kissed and a lot of the dialog on the Instagram and people were like, ‘Hey, it’s been building up to this,’ and other people were like, ‘Oh, man, that really surprised me.'”

“It’s an interesting dialog that people are having about this trio,” Owen continues. “I think all I can do is just keep bringing integrity and some emotion and depth to Helen because she’s one of the more earthy characters. She’s the den mother. She’s become a bit of a matriarch for these groups of people.”

Siren returns with all new episodes this July on Freeform.
