“The Fosters” Recap: She’s Not Ready

Things get intense on this week’s episode of The Fosters. Jesus (Noah Centineo) truly believes he and Emma (Amanda Leighton) are engaged, Callie (Maia Mitchell) is gearing up for her protest, and Brandon (David Lambert) is throwing his dad an engagement party. Nothing could possibly go wrong with any of this, right? ‘Engaged’ was written by Megan Lynn and directed by Kees Van Oostrum.

It’s a Dry Party | After Stef (Teri Polo) failed to help Brandon prepare for the engagement party there was no alcohol! The lack of alcohol could definitely make things awkward, like Jesus trying to convince Gabe (Brandon Quinn) to win Ana (Alexandra Barreto) back. When it comes time for the toasts, B opts with playing a song with Grace (Meg DeLacy) that he wrote for this occasion, and it makes Mike (Danny Nucci) cry. Jesus gets up and makes his toast, but it turns into an awkward message to Gabe. Since Gabe has been sneaking wine all night to make the party more tolerable, he decides to take Jesus’ advice and confess his feelings to Ana, and Brandon secretly listens.

B hears Ana tell Gabe he’s too late, that she loves Mike and is excited to marry him.

You Should Try Social Work | Callie is informed that she might have a better chance of getting into UCSD if she applies for a different major, possibly social work. Her artwork is great, but her portfolio isn’t finished, her chances of getting in as an art major are very low. While at the school she runs into her ex-boyfriend AJ (Tom Williamson), and looks at all his artwork. The two of them also run into each other at the engagement party, and Callie mentions to AJ that she’s going to a protest the next day.

Stef warns Callie about the dangers of protests and makes her promise to get out of there if things start to get intense. At the protest, AJ surprises Callie by showing up, but he’s not the only one with that idea. Aaron (Elliot Fletcher) is off to the sides, keeping an eye on Callie and sees her ex join.

Things begin to get rough as counter-protesters begin to chant “Build a wall!”

Engaged or Nothing | Stef and Lena (Sherri Saum) are very concerned with Jesus’s belief that he and Emma are engaged, but then they see Emma wearing the ring and really begin to panic. You can imagine Lena’s shock when she finds Emma sitting inside alone, crying. She’s not ready to be engaged, but she also wants to help Jesus with his TBI in any way that she can. By the end of their talk, Emma knows she needs to set things straight with Jesus.

Jesus does not react well to Emma telling him they’re not engaged and breaks up with her. Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) hears the whole thing and runs in to defend Emma, she knows the girl is good for her brother. Jesus doesn’t listen and makes them both get out, and Mariana follows Emma out to comfort her old friend.

When Jesus goes to the back house to talk to Gabe about what happened, he realizes his birth father has moved out.

Other Moments:

  • Brandon asks Grace to prom and her mother walks in on it, finding him in a compromising position.
  • Jude (Hayden Byerly) pretends he hasn’t already accepted the videogame sponsorship and tells Taylor (Izabela Vidovic) he won’t take it is she doesn’t want her to, and she doesn’t want him taking it.

With only 2 episodes left in the first half of the season, what could happen next?
