One of the things that draws actors to a movie or a TV show is the genre it is categorized in. For a lot of the cast members of Freeform’s supernatural thriller Dead of Summer, two of its three creators — Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis — was a major selling point, one he believes will also attract viewers.

“I think right off the bat what drew me in and when I heard that it’s the creators of Once Upon a Time and the writers of Lost, people are going to understand that this is a brand new show coming from those guys,” Ronen Rubinstein (Alex) says, “so it has a lot of potential and a lot of previous success. So just from that point of view, I think people are going to tune in and when they do actually tune in, I think they’re not going to be disappointed because it’s such a new direction that they’ve taken.”

Rubinstein goes on to say that Dead of Summer is very much a time piece and that the show’s characters are all special and flawed in their own way.

“All these characters are very eclectic and unique,” he says. “It’s an ensemble piece. There’s 10 major characters that are all different, all from different worlds, but at the end of the day they end up coming together and each specific character will have a specific relationship to one or two characters, or three.”

With its summer camp setting, all the different characters and stories on Dead of Summer, Rubinstein promises that viewers will have no problem connecting with the show.

“I’m sure most kids, especially in America and across the world, have experienced summer camp either as counselors or campers so there’s going to be a lot of stuff that people can relate to, especially to the characters,” Rubinstein explains. “Each character has something specific that I guarantee everyone will be able to relate to.”

Dead of Summer premieres tonight, June 28, at 9pm on Freeform.
