With Freeform’s highly anticipated new series Dead of Summer just days away, the cast has shed some more light on what fans can expect and why they should tune in!

“I play Deb, she — after along time of doing other things — has come to run the camp,” Mitchell says of her character. “She bought the camp and now I think she’s trying to input everything that she has to make the camp work.

“She wants the camp to be as joyful and exciting and wonderful an experience as it was for her for all the kids,” she continues. “I think it was a turning point in her life. It was one of those best years of her life ever and she wants that for everybody.”

Mitchell explains that the supernatural-horror, from the creators of Once Upon a Time and writers of LOST, is a “coming-of-age horror movie that has been turned into a TV show.”

“There’s a great emphasis based on character development and who these people are,” she says. “It’s a throwback because it’s set in the 80s, so it has a little bit of a nostalgic feel that I think serves the purpose really nicely.”

The fan-favorite actress also reveals that the new series isn’t just all scares.

“It’s creepy but there’s also a feeling of nostalgic loss, there’s this sadness to it. And then there’s also that joy of new discoveries that you don’t think you’ll find in a horror movie, but it’s usually my favorite part.”

Still on the fence on whether or not you should check Dead of Summer out? Elizabeth Mitchell tells you why you should!

“It’s really fun and scary, and it’s nice to be scared, and you cuddle more with the people that you love!” she says with a big laugh.

What will keep viewers coming back, she says are the relationships. “You get invested. There’s people that you want to be together and people that you want to figure things out and people that you don’t want to die, and all of things may or may not happen!”

Dead of Summer premieres Tuesday, June 28, at 9pm on Freeform.
