Those on Twitter who are anxiously waiting for FOX’s new horror-comedy series Scream Queens to make its premiere are most likely following the official show’s Twitter account (@ScreamQueens).
On Wednesday, @ScreamQueens sent out a tweet instructing future fans of the show to download social media app Snapchap and to follow #ScreamQueensFOX for a special surprise. Those who followed suit were greeted by a cryptic message, “Something is Coming…”
Later that evening, the Ryan Murphy anthology series unveiled its first official promo on the popular app as it aired simultaneously during the American Idol season finale telecast.
This is just the beginning of how Scream Queens plans to utilize social media to help keep fans engaged and invested along with a chance to lure in more viewers along the way.
“The show is by it’s nature about young people and its about how young people communicate,” Murphy says. “One thing that we really are hitting hard from the pilot on is social media — Instagram, Facebook, Twitter.”
The fifteen-episode first season, which revolves around a college campus rocked by a series of murders, may be FOX’s most interactive series yet.
“As the show progresses, clues to who the killer could be [will be] left trailed purposefully by the killer on different social media sites,” explains Murphy. “So that becomes a modern twist on the murder mystery which is very sort of today and very now and how I think young people communicate. So we hit that very heavily and I think it’s very socially relevant and very fun.”
