“The Fosters” Recap: Jealous Jude
Freeform’s The Fosters gives us another interesting and, at times, emotional episode! Grace is convinced she’s still sick because of a ghost, Mariana and Emma butt heads, and Callie and Jude finally get some quality sibling time. ‘Giving Up the Ghost’ was written by Megan Lynn and Wade Soloman, and is directed by Michael Medico.
Ghost Story | Brandon (David Lambert) is excited to spend a few days alone with Grace (Meg DeLacy) while her mom is out of town, but that excitement is diminished when he finds out Grace believes a ghost followed her home from the hospital. According to Grace, whenever she’s sick in the hospital she can feel a ghostly presence there, but this is the first time it has followed her home. She thinks it means she’s sick, but Brandon tells her it is probably the opposite. He believes the ghost followed her home to say bye because it knows she isn’t sick anymore. B decides to go online and look up directions on how to cleanse a dwelling of a ghost, then he and Grace cleanse her apartment. After, she agrees with him, she thinks she is getting better.
Derby Drama | Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) is thinking about life after high school and meets with the school counselor about her college choices. Her counselor gets real with her and informs her that her chances of getting into the schools she’s chosen is very low, especially since she quit STEAM club. When Emma (Amanda Leighton) tells Mariana about a competitive internship she’s applying for, Mariana decides to apply too. This pisses Emma off. It pisses her off so much that she goes after Mariana’s spot for jammer on their derby team. But instead of Mariana not getting the jammer position, Poppy (Nandy Martin) is the one who doesn’t get it, pissing off Jesus (Noah Centineo). Once Emma realizes she’s made a mistake she tries to give Poppy her spot back, but Ximena (Lisseth Chavez) won’t allow it. She earned that spot by being better than Poppy, so it looks like she’s just going to have to live with her choice. Emma also tells Mariana to apply for the internship, it’s only fair now.

Sibling Bonding | It’s been a while since Callie (Maia Mitchell) and Jude (Hayden Byerly) got more than a few moments of screen-time together, so seeing them together the majority of the episode was refreshing and definitely necessary. They go have dinner with Donald (Jamie McShane) and his new girlfriend Natalie (Cara Pifko), but what they don’t expect is Natalie’s teenage son, Caleb (Cullen McCarthy). Jude sees the way Donald acts like a father to Caleb and gets angry, Donald couldn’t be a father to him but he has no problem being a father to Caleb, so Jude leaves. But not before overhearing a conversation between Callie and Donald about Callie’s college plans. She didn’t get into UCSD’s art program, so it looks like she’s going to college in Oregon, leaving Jude behind.
When Callie realizes Jude left she goes after him, but he just wants to walk home. Callie is on the front porch waiting for him, and explains to him why she feels like she’s able to leave him with their family to go to college. This is the first time she’s ever felt like she can leave Jude, because she knows the Adams Foster’s are their family.
The next day Jude returns to Donald’s to apologize. Donald tells him he’s not trying to be Caleb’s dad, but Jude tells him that he should be. Caleb needs a dad, and Donald is there and capable of it. Jude matured a lot this episode to come to this conclusion!
Callie wants to appeal UCSD’s decision, but her art professor pal told her it most likely wouldn’t change things. She feels like Callie should pursue something she’s even more passionate about, helping people like Ximena. She saw the way Callie invested herself into saving her friend from unjust laws and feels that’s the direction the soon-to-be high school graduate should go in.
