“The Fosters” Recap: It’s Party Time

In this week’s episode of Freeform’s The Fosters the kids go to a party behind their moms backs and things go terribly wrong. And things aren’t much better between Stef (Teri Polo) and Lena (Sherri Saum) either. ‘Telling’ was written by Kris Q. Rehl and directed by Anne Renton.

Callie Meets Someone New | After class Ximena (Lisseth Chavez) invites Callie (Maia Mitchell) to a party the derby girls are throwing, but asks her not to tell Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) about it since she’s friends with her little sister Poppy (Nandy Martin). As Callie is leaving, she’s stopped by a male student played by Nick Fink, who asks her to sign a petition. She tells him she’s not a student there and walks away. Later that day she asks Mariana if she’s friends with Poppy, she didn’t know they knew each other.

At the party, Callie runs into the petition guy again, he tells her there’s an event in the quad tomorrow that she should check out. And after a serious talk with Ximena it seems like she decides to go.

Rough Patch | Stef is really throwing herself into her work, working closely with Cole (Tom Phelan) to protect transgender youths from pedophiles. Tess (Kristin Ariza) and Logan (Christopher Meyer) stop by while Lena is home to drop off a bottle of wine as a thank you for dinner and to invite them over to BBQ the next night.

Stef grabs a bottle of wine after work and discusses the BBQ and Jesus (Noah Centineo) with Lena. Lena thinks they should put Jesus on a gluten free diet and try to get him in a clinical trial, but Stef doesn’t want to. Lena gets frustrated with her wife, but Stef gets a work phone call before they can finish their discussion.

The next day Dean (Reggie Austin) knocks on the door to ask Lena if they can actually cook the food at their house? The gas got turned off at his family’s house, so Lena agrees. At the dinner, which is also still at the Adams-Foster residence. All the kids bail after dinner for the party that they lie to their parents about.

The adults continue eating and drinking, and some dirt comes out on both sides. Lena doesn’t think Stef should be drinking so much, which comes up again in an argument later.

Dean and Stef end up bonding, and so do Lena and Tess. Lena even gets some medical advice for Jesus from Tess, who agrees Jesus should try a gluten free diet. Tess can even get Jesus in to see a specialist she knows from med school.

Back to that aforementioned argument, Lena knows Stef lied about work and is very upset. She feels like she’s the only one contributing to the family and taking care of Jesus. They sort things out and go comfort Jesus.

I’m a Runner Now | Mariana lies to Logan and says she’s a runner to be able to spend more time with him, but the run definitely kicks her ass! She tells Logan about trying out for roller derby, she even shows him a gnarly bruise to impress him. Then to step her flirting up a notch, she invites him to the derby party that she and the other younger derby girls will be crashing.

At the party her siblings find out she’s been doing derby, despite her best efforts to keep them in the dark about it. But she plans on telling her moms about it, so they can’t use it against her. But that and all her other lies lead to a fight between her and Callie.

The next day Mariana tells Lena about derby and Jesus’ seizure. She gets grounded, but derby may be a go! Logan comes by to hang out, and Mariana finds out he has a girlfriend and is crushed.

Jesus Blackmails His Way Into a Party | Jesus squares things away with Emma (Amanda Leighton), then drops the bomb that he’s going to get his GED. It’s obvious Emma doesn’t think it’s a good idea.

Later, he blackmails Mariana into taking him to the party with her, which is definitely not a good idea. At the party, he doesn’t listen to his sister and dances which results in him having a seizure. Mariana wants to tell their moms about it, but Jesus threatens to tell them she allowed him to party and dance.

Lena talks to Jesus about the party, and grounds him from leaving or anyone coming over. He begins to throw something and she threatens to send him to an inpatient hospital if he keeps acting out.

Wrong Place For That Song | Brandon (David Lambert) still hasn’t told Grace (Meg DeLacy) that Cortney (Denyse Tontz) and her son are staying with them in Gabe’s (Brandon Quinn) house while he’s out of town.

Brandon takes Grace to the party with him, and during a lull in the set they decide to perform a song they wrote. Only this is not the place to play this type of music. Luckily the cops show up and cut their set short. They agree to play another gig together, in a more appropriate venue.

Gabe gets home early, but lets Cortney stay there for the week. Stef lets Brandon know there is a Cortney situation in front of Grace, who is definitely shocked by the news.

This was definitely a big episode for several of the characters, but it doesn’t hide from the fact that Jude (Hayden Byerly) was MIA without so much as a mention all episode. What do you think the youngest Adams-Foster child is up to during this time?

The Fosters airs Tuesdays at 8pm on Freeform.
