“The Fosters” Recap: Fallout

Freeform’s The Fosters is always pushing boundaries and bringing up the important issues, and that does not change in the season 5 premiere. We see the fallout from the season 4 finale; Callie (Maia Mitchell) has taken another girls spot in a sex ring, Jesus (Noah Centineo) thinks Brandon (David Lambert) got Emma (Amanda Leighton) pregnant, and the Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) and Jude are protesting their school going private. All of their actions have consequences, some more serious than others. ‘Resist’ was written and directed by Peter Paige.

I’m Not The Father | Jesus ran off at the end of last season when he thought Brandon got Emma pregnant, then took her to get an abortion. Brandon and Emma decide to drive around looking for him, but no luck. When they return home they find him with Gabe (Brandon Quinn) and Ana (Alexandra Barreto), and they all have a little chat. Brandon and Emma explain what really happened, how they were concerned about his health so they didn’t tell him that he got Emma pregnant. Jesus finally realizes that the cheating never happened, and is finally able to let it go. Unfortunately he didn’t realize this until after he destroyed Brandon’s room out of anger and betrayal.

Resist | We have seen in current events the impact non-violent protests can have, so props to the writers on this show for incorporating that into the season! Jude and Mariana are fighting to keep their school public, but Drew (Jared Ward) wants to privatize and wants the protest to end. Mr. Stratos (Mark Totty) decides to tell the students that they already lost and tries to leave, but Mariana won’t let him. He puts his hands on her and Jude steps up to protect his sister, but that also means taking a face full of pepper spray from the school’s security guard. Lena (Sherri Saum) is struggling with seeing the students, especially her children, getting hurt and forced to go to another school, so she says something to Drew. And she’s not the only one, Monte (Annika Marks) decides she will not be resigning as principal, therefore Drew’s vote as principal does not count. GO MONTE!!!

Callie’s Misadventures | The biggest cliffhanger from the season 4 finale was what was happening with Callie. She didn’t know Troy confessed to Martha’s murder so she decided to take another girls place in a sex ring, thinking Stef (Teri Polo) will save her. But there’s a snag in the plan when Callie’s phone ends up in another car. Stef is tracking the phone in the wrong car, pulls that car over and realizes the man driving doesn’t have Callie.

Meanwhile, Callie and Diamond are with Russell and his cronies at a rundown motel. Diamond “borrows” another girls phone and secretly sends Stef a picture of where they are. Callie goes along with what Russell wants for a while, but when he tries to get intimate with her she draws the line and tells him the truth. She’s a cops daughter and that cop is on the way. Russell begins to threaten her, but Diamond grabs his gun and holds it on him. They’re interrupted by another criminal and are able to hide in a bathroom until the police arrive. Once the bad guys are all arrested and the girls are safe, Stef fills Callie in on her trial and how her case will probably be dismissed. But Stef is also very concerned for her daughter, she’s worried that one day she won’t be picking her up from a sticky situation, she’ll be identifying her body in a morgue instead.

Other Thoughts:

  • Ana and Gabe were struggling with being the twins parents at the beginning of the episode, but by the end it seems like they’re settling into that role much better.
  • Monte stepping up to save the school is amazing and made me stand up and cheer, so go Monte!
  • Stef and Lena never contacted each other, even though they were both dealing with crazy situations…why?
