“The Fosters” Recap: Surprise Wedding

On the last episode of The Fosters, we saw Lena decorate the school with LGBT sex ed posters, Mariana discovers the truth about Emma, and Callie will most definitely be going to court. This weeks episode continues all those stories and more! “The Long Haul” was written by Megan Lynn and Wade Soloman, and directed by Bradley Bredeweg. Here’s what went down:

You’re Getting Married?!? | Stef’s (Teri Polo) mom, Sharon (Annie Potts), and boyfriend, Will (Rob Morrow), surprise the family and bring some exciting news. They’re getting married and they want the whole family to be there! They were planning on just having a courthouse wedding, but Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) convinced her moms to let them get married in the backyard.

Stef is later approached by her mother, who admits she can’t marry Will. She tells Stef he is going to formally ask her for permission, but she wants Stef to tell him no. Stef doesn’t want to lie for her mother, so she convinces her to tell Will they need to call off the wedding immediately.

Stef and Lena (Sherri Saum) receive their divorce papers in the mail, and Stef seems upset by them. She wants to get re-married as soon as they can. Lena says she doesn’t really care if they get re-married, they’re still married to her.

Sharon continues to go back and forth on her decision over marrying or not up until it’s wedding time. She’s in her dress and minutes from walking down the aisle when she makes her final decision; she’s not getting married. Stef and Lena are there to help talk her way through the decision and telling Will. Sharon explains to him she still wants to be with him, she just doesn’t like the idea of a “contract” keeping them together. Will is okay with that, he just wants to be with her.

Stef and Lena remain behind for a few moments and Stef has a really beautiful monologue about her love and marriage with Lena. They decide to surprise everyone and get married!

Callie Gets a Little Stalker-ish | Callie (Maia Mitchell) still believes Troy (Levi Fiehler) is responsible for the murder, and she’s going to do everything she can to prove it. She needs to check out his alibi to see if it’s as airtight as they were led to believe. AJ (Tom Williamson) comes with Callie to the place where Troy said he was working the night of the murder. AJ goes inside to try to speak with the manager that was on duty that night, but he’s informed that manager hasn’t been employed there in a while, and she’s Troy’s girlfriend. Troy is there and speaks briefly with AJ, and it’s clear he’s suspicious.

He was suspicious, indeed! Troy followed AJ out to Callie’s car and yelled at her through the window to leave him alone or he’ll have her arrested.

You’d think Callie would stop her Troy investigation there, but this is Callie we’re talking about. She uses Mariana’s online social media account to friend request Troy’s girlfriend so she can look more into Troy’s alibi, but AJ, and probably most of the audience, thinks Callie is taking this too far. She should just drop it and deal with the case in court.

Other Thoughts:
• Emma (Amanda Leighton) tries to do the right thing and tell Jesus (Noah Centineo) about the abortion, but Jesus still can’t read so he has his grandma read it to him. Sharon reads ahead and sees what it says, but decides Jesus still isn’t ready for that kind of news so she doesn’t tell him. She instead finds Emma before the wedding and gives her the comfort she’s been in need of.
• Lena’s LGBT sex-ed class is a huge success, but most kids aren’t out to their parents so they can’t get a signed permission slip. Lena does the moral thing and teaches them anyway, but if the school were to find out she would be in a world of trouble. The class was also a great way for Jude (Hayden Byerly) and Noah (Kalama Epstein) to get on the same page about sex.
• Brandon (David Lambert) and Grace (Meg DeLcay) kiss at the wedding, and it was hurried and awkward. They should just let Brandon have female friends sometimes and not turn them all into a love interest.
