The Fosters Recap | Ghosts, Dreams, and Everything in Between

Freeform‘s The Fosters picked up episode 12 right where the mid-season premiere left off, with Jesus in a coma, Callie at the police precinct, and Brandon, Jude and Mariana left to take care of themselves. “Dream a Little Dream” is full of twists and turns to keep you on your toes. The episode was written by Joanna Johnson, and directed by Rob Morrow.

“What happened to that nice kid that came to live with us?” | Brandon (David Lambert) confronts Jude (Hayden Byerly) about what happened at the marina, and Jude decides to tell the truth: they were getting high on some random boat when the owner came and almost set sail with them aboard. Brandon tries to warn Jude about the dangers of a 14 year old smoking pot, but Jude doesn’t want to hear it. Brandon wants to know what happened to the nice kid they adopted, because he misses that Jude. Later, Brandon calls Julliard to see if there’s anything he can do to still go, but they inform him his spot has already been filled. Now there is definitely no way he’s going to his dream school.

Mariana Accepts Responsibility | Mat (Jordan Rodrigues) comes over to get the truth about Nick (Louis Hunter) from Mariana (Cierra Ramirez). She admits she was scared that Nick might kill himself if she broke up with him, so she continued to let him think they were dating so he would be safe. Mat reassures Mariana that he still loves her and she won’t lose him. She tells Mat, “I’m ready” which means they finally slept together after all their failed attempts. Later at the hospital Mariana admits to Emma (Amanda Leighton) that it is her fault that Jesus (Noah Centineo) is in a coma, she was hallucinating Nick because of the pills she was taking, then the real Nick came and tried to protect her, but Jesus didn’t know that. He was also just trying to protect her.

He-Said-She-Said | Callie (Maia Mitchell) gets questioned by two cops who seem to play “good cop, bad cop” with her. Troy (Levi Fiehler) comes in with his lawyer to report the accident as well, but their stories don’t quite align. The “bad cop” believes Troy over Callie because Troy has a perfect record and Callie has a history, but the “good cop” isn’t so sure. He manipulates Callie into admitting she is at fault for getting in the car with Troy, and she signs a statement saying that. Unfortunately for Callie, admitting any kind of guilt in a statement means you can get arrested for that crime, and that’s exactly what happened. She gets taken to a high-security juvenile detention center. At her arraignment the judge admits the charges are “dubious”, but since she’s run away before she is a flight risk and must await her hearing in juvie instead of waiting it out at home.

Coma Dreams Are Weird | Stef (Teri Polo) and Lena (Sherri Saum)  spend the day at Jesus’ bedside, waiting for him to wake up. The doctors say his brain is still swollen, so they give him something else for the swelling. Lena sits outside the room for a while and is comforted by the mother of the patient in the room next to Jesus’, the lady gives her hope and some great advice. When she later asks the patients husband about the lady, she finds out that woman has been dead for several years. Her ghost was there with her daughter, and was there to comfort Lena when she needed it.

While in the coma, Jesus is having a strange dream involving Nick and Mariana. In the dream Nick kills Mariana when he was supposed to protect her. Finally, the swelling goes down in his brain, but he has a fever so they need to cool him off before he can wake up. But he does eventually wake up! Only problem is, when he tries to talk all that comes out is nonsense, he’s just babbling. He may have some brain damage from the injury.

Brandon is heartbroken, Mariana fixed things with Mat, Jude is high, Jesus is awake, and Callie is in juvie, somehow this seems like a semi-typical day for the Adams-Foster family. What do you think will happen next week? Will Callie be okay in juvie? Will Jesus learn to speak, or is there going to be a long difficult road ahead of him? Find out next week!
