The Fosters Recap | The Kids Are in Over Their Heads

In Freeform’s The Fosters mid-season premiere, things got shaky for the Adams Foster family. Jude (Hayden Byerly) and Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) both demonstrate what different types of drugs do to a teenager, Brandon (David Lambert) deals with the aftermath of the SAT debacle, Callie (Maia Mitchell) gets into an accident, and Jesus (Noah Centineo) fights for his life. The episode happens the same day of the mid-season finale, all the events of the two episodes take place in a small amount of time. Here is what went down in “Insult to Injury” :

Jesus is in serious trouble | Jesus gets loaded into an ambulance after nick knocked him out. He thinks he’s fine, but suddenly starts complaining that it smells like gasoline just before he has a seizure. When they get to the hospital Jesus is still seizing, causing him to foam at the mouth. Stef (Teri Polo) remains by her sons side the whole time. Later, Jesus regains consciousness and talk to a cop who accuses him of attacking Nick (Louis Hunter). Jesus complains of the hospital smelling like gasoline, and begins to seize again. The doctors tell Stef and Lena (Sherri Saum) that his brain is swelling and he needs to be placed into a medically induced coma in order for them to place a bolt in his head to monitor the swelling.

Callie avoids the law | Callie is still in the car with Troy (Levi Fiehler), who she now thinks murdered his grandmother. He wants Callie to stop trying to get Kyle out of jail. Callie asks to get dropped off, but Troy doesn’t listen, instead he begins to drive more erratically. They fight and end up getting into an accident. Callie gets out of the car, reports the accident, then runs before Troy can get her. Troy notices the driver of the other car involved is unconscious, so he gets in his car and drives off.

Callie gets picked up by Aaron (Elliot Fletcher) and fills him in on what happened. Aaron encourages her to give the police her statement, but not to include her Troy theory. Callie finds out Jesus is in the hospital and Aaron rushes her there. Mike (Danny Nucci) and AJ (Tom Williamson) also rush to the hospital, where AJ and Callie apologize to each other for their fight. AJ also apologizes to Aaron, saying he wouldn’t have made those cracks about his height if he knew Aaron was trans. Aaron looks over at Callie, he seems hurt by her outing him, and later confronts her about it. “It’s just, not your story to tell.” She understands and apologizes. Then she sees that the accident is on the news, police are looking for information about the accident. She decides to report what happened, but is unaware that leaving the scene of an accident is a felony. Uh-oh.

Coconut Telegraph | Jude is still sneaking around with Noah (Kalama Epstein), and the two of them sneak aboard a sailboat in the marina. Once on board, they light a joint, raid the cabin for snacks, and kiss in the bed. Suddenly, the owner of the boat is on deck and getting ready to set sail. The boys only option of escape is to run by the boat owner and jump onto the dock without getting caught. Once out of the marina, they see Brandon and Cortney (Denyse Tontz) driving by and catch a ride to the hospital.

Brandon struggles with the truth | Brandon feels terrible about what he did to Cortney, so he goes to her house and explains what happened with Julliard and the SATs, and they end up hooking up on her toy strewn floor. When he finds out about Jesus he goes out looking for Jude so they can go be with their brother. Once they are all safely at the hospital, Cortney tells Brandon that hooking up with him was a mistake, and that she will never get over how he hurt her and her son.

Once Mike arrives, he pulls Brandon aside and gives him a book about New York, says he’s had it for over a year because he knew his son would get into Julliard. Brandon doesn’t have the heart to tell his father he won’t be going to the school of his dreams, or any other school.

Mariana’s pill problem becomes apparent | Mariana arrives at the hospital with Lena and her BFF Emma (Amanda Leighton), and Mariana is not looking so hot. Emma spills the beans to Lena that Mariana has been taking Jesus’ ADHD medication. Lena is furious, and makes her get checked out by a doctor. Mariana tries to justify her use of her brothers pills, but Lena isn’t happy.

After the doctor clears her, Mariana talks to Mat (Jordan Rodrigues). She lies to him about Nick, but does come clean about taking her brothers meds. Later, Emma blames Mariana for what happened to Jesus. She says if she wasn’t seeing Nick behind everyone’s backs then this wouldn’t have happened. Mat is around the corner and hears the whole thing, he knows Mariana lied to him.

No More Trouble | Stef and Lena tell the kids that Jesus is out of surgery, but they can’t see him so they should all go home and get some sleep. They beg their kids to stay out of trouble, they can’t handle anymore. Once the kids leave they look in on Jesus from outside his door, talking about what Jesus may face when he wakes up.

What a drama filled episode! It seems like every one of the Adams Foster kids is in some sort of trouble, and poor Lena and Stef don’t even know about all of it! What do you think will happen next week? Will Callie get arrested? Will Brandon come clean about Julliard? And will Jesus be the same kid they’ve grown up with, or will he change?
