“Fear the Walking Dead” Recap: A League of Their Own

The season 4 premiere of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead ended with new character Althea asking Alicia what her story is, so ‘Another Day in the Diamond’ does just that. We see Alicia, Nick, Strand, Madison, and Luciana and what they’ve been up to since the dam explosion. The episode was written by Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg, and directed by Michale E. Satrazemis.

Turnips | The episode kicks off with the Clark family, plus Strand (Coleman Domingo) and Luciana (Danay Garcia), waking up in nice rooms in a baseball stadium. Madison (Kim Dickens) is with a young girl named Charlie (Alexa Nisenson), they found her outside their walls and Madison wants to find the girls family. Madison even goes so far as to start building the girl her own room in a dugout. Charlie hangs out with Nick while he tends to their crops, he’s discovered the turnips, and later realizes that probably everything else, has been destroyed by weevils. Charlie asks about their food storage, which definitely raises some red flags in my mind.

The group, minus Nick, sets out to try to find Charlie’s family. Nick refuses to leave the walls of the stadium, probably suffering from some intense PTSD.

Naomi | Madison’s group makes it to an abandoned town, where at first it seems like it’s completely empty. But Madison being Madison decides to keep searching for the girls family. Instead they come upon Naomi (Jenna Elfman), who holds Madison at gunpoint for her keys. Madison tells her about their settlement, that she can go back with them, but Naomi runs up a silo. Madison and Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) want her to trust them, but she falls through the roof and into a pool of water and infected. They go in after her, rescuing her from the putrid water and the infected sitting in it.

They camp out at the silos that night, and can hear the infected inside other silos. Someone has obviously placed them in there, but who? Naomi tells the group about herself and how she’s just passing through, she knows nothing of this town or Charlie and her missing family.

Her Family | When they return, Madison and the group sees Nick outside the walls, he’s crashed into a pole as a result of his PTSD while driving through the infected. They go back inside, and it turns out Naomi was a nurse and can tend to his cuts. Madison fills Naomi in on the stadium, they built it themselves and there are 47 people living there. We know from earlier in the episode that they’ve been there for a year, and are looking to be completely self-sufficient soon.

Suddenly, a group of large trucks and RVs arrive. Alicia tells everyone to get weapons and they go out to see what’s going on. This is the group responsible for the number signs posted everywhere. Madison approaches the strangers and asks their leader, Mel (Kevin Zegers) what’s going on. He basically tells her that he knows what’s going on in her camp, thanks to Charlie, and he’s there to clean up their mess, because that’s what they do. He says they can give them everything and join them, or they can essentially be starved out. The Clark’s et al end up inside the stadium, still working, because Madison will not give their haven up.

The Present | Now we’re back to where the season premiere left off. Strand reveals that the group that Charlie is with is called the Vultures, but tells Althea (Maggie Grace) that they aren’t a part of that group. They decide to work together and load up into the SWAT truck.

Fear the Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9pm on AMC.
