“Fallout” Episode ‘The Past’ Recap: Vault of Secrets

Fallout continues in “The Past,” which takes a bit of a detour in a slower, less violent episode. I’m sure things will only get better from here… Not. This episode,  Lucy and Maximus finally meet, while Norm uncovers more about the secret conspiracy behind Vault 32.

Liars Revealed | Underneath a bridge, Maximus (Aaron Moten), still in the armor, and Thaddeus (Johnny Pemberton) are chatting about their recent escapades, when Thaddeus insists to be branded by him. After doing so, Maximus finally removes his helmet and reveals himself to him, which Thaddeus doesn’t take too well. When Maximus tries to explain, Thaddeus sticks a key into the back of his armor, which disables it, leaving him stuck in the armor, as Thaddeus takes Wilzig’s head and scrams.

The next morning, giant bugs arrive and start crawling over Maximus, until Lucy (Ella Purnell) shoots them off him and he begs her to let him out. She is naturally untrusting, given that in her own words, “Everyone I’ve met out here has tried to kill me,” but she then vomits and Maximus realizes that she has radiation sickness and he’ll give her pills that will help if she lets him out. She does, but passes out immediately after.

Rock the Vote | Norm (Moises Arias) and Chet (Dave Register) are still exploring Vault 32 when they find corpses trying to get into Vault 31. Back with Lucy and Maximus, she tells him that she can track the missing head, but she’ll only help him take it back to Brotherhood if he promises to use their resources to rescue her father.

He agrees and they head off together, during which Lucy asks what has happened in the last 200 years after the bombs fell. Norm looks up personnel records for the Vaults, and sees that Hank was originally from Vault 31, as well as Betty (Leslie Uggams), just as Betty is elected as the new Overseer of the Vault.

Lucy and Maximus come across two strangers while trying to cross a bridge, who demand to know if they’re armed. Maximus lies and says they aren’t, but Lucy attempts to quell the situation by insisting that they hold up their hands and cross the bridge in unison. Unfortunately, one of them pulls out a gun and shoots Maximus in the arm, but Maximus grabs Lucy’s gun and kills both of them.

Rebuilding Year | Norm tells Chet that Vault 33 has always elected an Overseer from Vault 31 and Chet reveals that Steph (Annabel O’Hagen) is also from that Vault. Lucy sees a billboard for the New California Republic established in 2142 and is horrified, since the whole purpose of her Vault was to repopulate after the war, but it already happened.

Maximus then shows her a massive crater in the middle of what used to be the city. Maximus’s wounded arm starts bleeding again and Lucy takes him to an abandoned hospital in search of a first aid kit. Once inside, Maximus accidentally triggers a trapdoor and falls down it.

Betty announces that some citizens of Vault 33 will move into Vault 32 to rebuild it and when Norm goes inside, he sees that not only has the Vault been cleaned up, but the computer where he found the record of his mother has been destroyed. Norm asks Betty what happened to his mother’s wrist device and she says that she and Hank buried it with his mother. Lucy and Maximus awaken on two gurneys to find that they are in another Vault, which Lucy is thrilled by.
