We’ve been excited about Devious Maids ever since the order of the pilot over at ABC. With March Cherry’s (Desperate Housewives) name attached to the project, we knew the show would be something we’d fall in love with. When ABC passed on the pilot and didn’t order it to series, we were very much saddened. When news broke that Maids found a new home with Lifetime, we were ecstatic! The show has become our most guiltiest pleasure — a sexy whodunnit murder mystery that has us both on the edge of our seat and laughing out loud at the same time. Below is our recap of the series premiere.
The murder of Adrian (Tom Irwin) and Evelyn (Rebecca Wisocky) Powell’s maid Flora Hernandez (Paula Garcés) kicks off the Devious Maids premiere and thus begins the season-long mystery of whodunnit.
Prior to her death, Flora is seen writing a note to her employer which is where it is revealed that she was raped. Moments after her lifeless body falls into the backyard pool and tints it blood-red, we see a bartender holding the murder weapon. But did he do it?
MARISOL | Marisol (Ana Ortiz) takes on a job working for Michael (Brett Cullen) and Taylor (Brianna Brown) Stappord. With Marol being well-spoken and accent-free, Mrs. Stappord wonders why Marisol is seeking employment as a maid.
ZOILA | Zoila (Judy Reyes) is a tough, no-nonsense maid who works for her slightly unstable and emotionally reckless employer Genevieve Delatour (Susan Lucci). She’s the main maid of the house which also employs her daughter Valentina.
VANENTINA | Valentina (Edy Ganem) is a young, bright-eyed girl with an interest in fashion and has eyes for her employers hot, young son Remi (Drew Van Acker). When Genevieve becomes hysterical after being dumped by her pool boy, Valentina suggests Remi live at the house so that his mother doesn’t feel so alone.
CARMEN | Carmen (Roselyn Sanchez) is straight-forward and determined to get her singing career off the ground. She gets work as a maid working for Latin pop star Alejandro Rubio (Matt Cedeño) with the hopes that he will help get her foot in the door. She must only get past through her main obstacle in the house, head maid Odessa (Melinda Page Hamilton).
ROSIE | Rosie (Dania Ramirez) is a desperate young mother working for Spence (Grant Show) and Perri (Mariana Klaveno) Westmore. Rosie’s dream while working for the Westmore’s is to bring her son to the states from Guadalajara. There’s only one problem: the self-obsessed Mrs. Westmore would rather keep her salon appointments and media interviews than to give Rosie a day off to see an immigrations lawyer.
During a break in the park, Marisol runs into Rosie, Zoila, and Carmen where she learns that Flora’s employers are “strange,” which peaks her interest in the couple. Marisol overhears that Mrs. Powell’s maid Flora was murdered and is in need of a new one, so Marisol offers her services. Mr. Powell begins to suspect that Marisol is not really a maid and he “can’t wait to find out what you’re really doing here.”
LOL
• After investigators get all the evidence they need from the blood-spattered room where Flora was killed, they start to head out, which upsets Evelyn. “My maid was murdered!” she says, crying hysterically. “Who’s going to clean all this up?”
• Rosie pours her heart out to Mrs. Westmore about her son not being able to come to the states in this emotional scene. Mrs. Westmore then says, “So.. I’m late for a facial. And I can’t miss this appointment because I’m being interviewed tomorrow and my pores are just…”
OMG
• The Stappord’s throw a birthday dinner party which is crashed by an uninvited guest — Mr. Stappord’s ex-wife, Olivia (Valerie Mahaffey). She makes a big scene and throws a crystal heart across the room which then shatters to the floor. Marisol then gets a hold of her, “Do not screw with me bitch, or you will live to regret it.” After Marisol kicks Oliva out of the house, she is met with a priceless reaction from the dinner guests, Evelyn Powell in particular.
OMFG
• We learn why Marisol has been so inquisitive about Flora’s murder and why she offered to work at the Powell’s. We see Marisol visiting Flora’s murder suspect in jail where we find out that he is Marisol’s son!!! She knows he’s innocent and will do what she can to get him out. “I want to get out of here, mom,” he tells her. “I’m working on it, baby,” she replies. “I’m working on it.”
