“Day of the Dead” Episode ‘Til Dead Do Us Part’ Recap: A Past That Bites Back

Mawinhakin’s past has come back with a vengeance. In Day of the Dead’s 5th episode, “Til the Dead Do Us Part”, we learn that Cleargenix has dug up more than just an oil source.

Dad to the Rescue | Luke Bowman’s (Daniel Doheny) lake party has officially gotten crowded with a handful of hungry zombies surrounding him on a narrow bridge. Lucky for him, his father Trey (Christopher Russell) arrives just in time to mow one down with his car as one undead grabs a hold of Luke. After plowing the zombie down, however, Trey’s car stalls. Luke returns the favor and rescues his dad with his own car.

Past with a Vengeance | Sarah Blackwood (Morgan Holmstrom) is at a standoff with one of Dr. Logan’s (Lucia Walters) men at the Cleargenix laboratory. Detective McDermott (Mike Dopud) is holding Dr. Logan at gunpoint and tensions are running high as Dr. Logan demands her officer to shoot Sarah. Shots are fired and everyone scatters for cover. During a gunfight with Rhodes (Kevin O’Grady), Sarah runs out of ammunition. McDermott and she plan to bolt, but just as they stand to make a move, McDermott is shot by Rhodes. Believing that he’s not going to make it out alive, McDermott tells Sarah to escape and inform Captain Pike (Marci T. House) of what Dr. Logan and Cleargenix have done.

Once again, Dr. Logan sends Rhodes on the hunt for Sarah while she gets McDermott shackled and caged with the drill site zombie. Dr. Logan intends of using McDermott to learn from the drill site zombie, whom she has determined is an early Swedish settler from the 1700s. Dr. Logan has also learned that the wooden mask that she found near the zombie is that of an indigenous tribe that resided in Mawinhaken hundreds of years ago. Could the zombie and the mask be connected?

Cold Feet Takes on a Whole New Meaning | At the wedding, guests have arrived and are waiting for Jai (Dejan Loyola) and Amy’s (Kristin Dawn Dinsmore) ceremony to begin, completely oblivious to the chaos that’s going down in town. Herb’s (Garry Chalk) wife, Janet, is getting anxious to get the ceremony going because the guests are starting to talk. Little do they know that an army of ravenous zombies is about to postpone the ceremony.

The wedding guests start getting devoured and Amy and her Man of Honor, Shawn (Victor Zinck Jr.), are forced to believe what Jai had been telling them about the undead apocalypse. During the chaos, Janet loses it and takes a risk to salvage her daughter’s wedding cake. Despite her heroic effort to save Amy’s special day, Janet swiftly ends up on the menu. In a moment of panic, Amy stands stunned among the disorder unable to run away. Jai taps into his inner-hero and scoops her up to get her to safety.

Father-Son Bonding | Trey and Luke get some much-needed bonding time during the car ride back to town. Luke confides in his dad about his disappointment in his mom, Mayor Paula Bowman (Miranda Frigon). Luke believes that his mom is an opportunistic politician who cares about nothing more than being mayor.

Trey becomes emotional and tells his son about not being happy with Luke’s mom. He confesses to the affair and his plan to leave Luke’s mom after the mayoral race to be with Nicole (Caitlin Stryker).

A Mayor with a Plan | At the Mawinhaken Police Department, Captain Pike taps state police for aid with the situation of “domestic terrorists” that are destroying the town. Cam’s concern for his father, Detective McDermott, is growing, so he tries to reach his dad on the station’s emergency radio channel. Neither Captain Pike nor Cam is successful.

Trey and Luke make it to the police department soon thereafter, and Mayor Bowman devices a plan to convert the local Paymart into a crisis center. The group at the station pack up all of the guns and ammunition they can carry and make their way to the Paymart.

Not All Heroes Wear Capes | Jai, Amy, Herb, and Shawn find temporary shelter in an event room at the country club. Shawn takes it as an opportunity to propose to Amy. He confesses to Amy that he’s been in love with her since high school and that he regrets breaking up with her then. This confirms Jai’s suspicions of Shawn’s intentions.

Before Amy could form an answer, zombies begin to bust in. Shawn jumps into action in the heat of the moment and tries to fight them off. Before he could even get a punch in, a zombie presses its thumbs to his eyeballs and quickly takes Shawn down.

Jai, Amy, and Herb are backed into a corner as more zombies swarm in. Out of nowhere, a zombie gets a hatchet to the back of the skull. Lauren (Natalie Malaika) has come to their rescue! She helps them escape the building through the kitchen and out a back door where her get-away hearse is waiting.

Dr. Frankenstein | Dr. Logan is making progress on her research of the zombie “virus”. She has learned that the immune system of a living human is able to combat the virus as if it were nothing more than the common cold. Once the infected person dies, however, the virus takes hold. “What was once dead now lives,” Dr. Logan explains. Dr. Logan injects a dead rat retrieved by Rhodes with the virus. Seconds after the injection, the rat comes back to life!

Sarah, who’s been lurking in the shadows, takes advantage of Rhodes and Dr. Logan’s distraction. She leaps in and takes Rhodes hostage with a blade to the throat. Sarah convinces the Cleargenix officer to release McDermott from the cage, and a fight breaks out. In the middle of the commotion, the shackled zombie is able to break free. Sarah manages to escape but McDermott is not as lucky. He ends up taking a nasty bite to the jugular and dies soon after… Or did he?
