The CW has several shows scheduled to return in the midseason but one new series we are looking forward to amidst the returning favorites is Riverdale, based on the Archie comics so many of us grew up with. It is a darker, more twisted reimagining of the universe the comics created but you will still recognize the iconic characters, even if they don’t quite look like the way you remember.
Here are five things we’re most looking forward to about Riverdale.
Character Interpretations | If you’re like me and grew up reading the Archie comics, you know that over the years there have been many interpretations of the main characters while keeping with each character’s core essence. This series treads darker than the Archie-verse most of us are used to, with the story revolving around a murder and the characters themselves being far less cartoony (or optimistic about life in general). It has a very Pretty Little Liars feel to it both with the tone and the overarching mystery. There are some characters that seem to step right out of the comics but there are also characters that differ drastically from their comic counterparts and I am very interested to see how they progress.
Betty & Veronica | Nothing gets me more excited than seeing strong, interesting female characters supporting each other. On top of that, their interactions are about them, not just about a boy. Both Betty and Veronica are their own person with their own issues and their own strengths. They are incredibly different but complement each other and their chemistry is effortless from the start. My fingers are crossed that there is no catty love triangle drama between them in the future episodes and they continue to have each other’s backs.
Whodunit | Aside from the drama surrounding being a high schooler on a CW show, the town is reeling from the recent murder of one of their own. It is one giant murder mystery with pieces of the puzzle coming out in who saw/heard what. It is going to be a challenge as an audience to piece together what each person knows as it is revealed and speculate as to who the real murderer is.
Nicknames and Pop Culture References | The pop culture references are out in full force in a borderline over -the-top way but it feels natural in this universe. Some of the nicknames thrown around in the pilot are witty enough word play to have me in stitches. They add to the witty rapport the kids have with each other and add lighter beats even in more serious scenes.
The Music | The show’s soundtrack isn’t the only star (though it is great). We are lucky enough to get time with Josie and The Pussycats who absolutely steal the scenes they are in with their harmonies. If that isn’t enough, Archie himself is giving the music thing a try and we will hopefully get to hear some more Andrews originals as he becomes more confident in himself.
I am cautiously optimistic about Riverdale as I always am when it comes to adaptations of something I love, but from what I have seen, it is going to be a captivating ride with many twists and turns.
What do you guys hope to see from the series? Let us know in the comments!
