“The Originals” Cast Talk Season 4 and Their Characters’ Journey

At San Diego Comic Con 2016, OMFGTV sat down with the cast of the hit CW series “The Originals” to discuss the upcoming fourth season of “The Vampire Diaries” spinoff and how their characters will evolve when the show returns.

Charles Michael Davis, who plays Marcel Gerard, had a lot to say on his character’s victory over the Mikaelsons at the end of season 3. “I was talking to (Michael) Narducci before season 3, saying, you know, me personally, I want to be great, I want to be a good actor. But also, I want the character to be great and aspire to be more and not just sit on the sidelines. So, I was very happy that the character had a full arc this season.”

Davis also added that Marcel, “Misses the Mikaelsons secretly” and that his fear is becoming Klaus. “The thing you hate, you are. But if embrace it for its good qualities, you have power and ownership over it.”

Riley Voelkel previewed the evolution of her character of Freya Mikaelson. “I think she showed a lot of weakness and was very vulnerable when we first met her. That being said, she was also very powerful. She wasn’t accepted into the family right away and that was all she ever wanted. And now, they’ve accepted her and she will do absolutely anything for them, even if that means doing something that might turn some people against her.”

“At the end of the season, she became more like the female Klaus,” Voelkel continued. “Like, ‘I’m gonna kill people, I’m gonna do all this stuff just to save my family’ and Klaus is kind of softening up a bit. So, I think you’re going to see hopefully her strengths and her powers and maybe a more sadistic side.”

Yusuf Gatewood’s character of Vincent in the finale of season 3 took a stand against the Mikaelsons in light of the deaths of Cami and Davina. “Everybody’s still thinking about that loss,” Gatewood said. “And that’s what drove Marcel to really stand up and say ‘we’ve got to do something about this.’ Vincent said to Marcel, ‘I don’t like you, I don’t like any vampire, but I do respect you and we’ve got to get these guys back for what they’ve done and what they continue to do- terrorizing our community, taking out good people and leeching off the energy of our city.’ So, I think Marcel and Vincent were an unlikely alliance and that’s something we’ll see strained in the first episode of season 4.”

Finally, executive producer Michael Narducci discussed how the Mikaelsons have changed over the last few seasons. “We wanted to end on a good note that the family was united, but on a bad note that the family was taken down. At the end of season 2, they were all fine- Hayley was a werewolf, but the Mikaelsons were fine- but they couldn’t stand each other. And that had to reverse. Now, it’s a matter of can they come out of that and stand together as a family.”

The Originals premieres Friday, March 17, at 8pm on The CW.
