“Batwoman” Bad News: Ruby Rose Is Out, Role Will Be Recast

The CW’s “Batwoman” is down a Batwoman.

In a shocking development, Ruby Rose, who played the title character in season one of the Arrowverse series, has decided to step away from the iconic role ahead of the series’ recently announced second season.

In a statement with The Hollywood Reporter, Rose said, “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show… Thank you to everyone who made season one a success, I am truly grateful.”

The Australian actress, who, like her character, is an out member of the LGBT community, received fan backlash for her casting as Kate Kane/Batwoman, leading to her quitting her Twitter account in the wake of her casting. She did not cite this as a reason for her exit.

Warner Bros. Television has stated that the title role will be recast with another LGBT actress and the show is still expected to return in 2021. Production on the series’ first season was shut down ahead of schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Batwoman” also stars Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Nicole Kang, Camrus Johnson and Dougray Scott. The CW had earlier in the week announced a Batwoman vs Superman crossover to air next year, which at this point, is still on.
