“Cloak & Dagger” Season Premiere Recap: Social Justice Warriors

It’s been a rough few months for Marvel TV fans following the purge of Netflix’s “Defenders” universe. Thankfully, “Cloak & Dagger’s” two part season two premiere is so damn good, it could fill the void left by “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones” and the darker edge of the Marvel Universe.

In part one of the season two premiere, “Restless Energy,” Tyrone’s efforts to help the PTSD-stricken O’Reilly catch drug runners backfire, while Tandy must struggle with the aftermath of discovering her father’s abuse.

Mirror Images | The season begins almost the same way season one began, with Tandy, now grown up, doing ballet, while Tyrone is watching a drug deal go down. Tyrone ends up teleporting to steal money and drugs from the gang before delivering the evidence to O’Reilly, who is struggling to fire a gun correctly at the firing range. O’Reilly is angry at Ty for getting involved in a drug running operation, especially seeing as he’s still wanted for murder, and advises him to stay out of the way, while also dropping the word, “Endgame.” Hmm.

Tandy, meanwhile, is attending a domestic violence support group with Melissa after the bombshell that Nathan abused her. All seems well, until Mikayla, another girl in the group, refuses to talk about the bruises on her wrists. Tandy swipes her ID and snaps a photo of it before snagging textbooks from Ty’s school to deliver to him at the church while watching old movies on VHS to make anyone born in the 90s feel old.

Everyone I Care About | The next day, Ty teleports to check on up on his parents, who seem to have divorced, as well as Evita, who turns down a date offer from someone else. Tandy tracks down Mikayla and her abusive boyfriend Jeremy, then waits until Jeremy falls asleep to carve “Leave her alone” into the wall with her dagger. Ty sneaks into the headquarters of the drug runners to snatch up more evidence, but gets busted until Tandy rescues him. Tandy is pissed at Ty for not telling her about his nighttime activities, but Ty fires back by revealing he’s been keeping tabs on her as well and has seen her go after abusive people before Tandy storms off in a huff.

Waffles or Pancakes | The next, next day, Mikayla shows up to the support group to inform them that thugs hacked up Jeremy’s walls- and it made her realize that he needs her. Tandy is naturally horrified, along with the audience at WonderCon 2019 during the advance screening of this episode, who got very uncomfortable. Ty drops off the evidence at O’Reilly’s apartment as she gets a call from the police chief who chastises her for her recent failures to take down the drug gangs. O’Reilly also lets slip the location of a meet between the top gang leaders in New Orleans at a club with Ty in earshot.

Ty apologizes to Tandy and convinces her to help him plant a tape recorder at the room where the meet is going down. They sneak into the club, after a humorous conversation about holding hands like waffles or pancakes, and Ty plants the recorder under the table. As they wait for the gang leaders to arrive, Tandy and Ty have a fun night dancing, until they see blood spraying on the door. They race to the room, only to find dead bodies everywhere.
