Marvel’s “Agents of SHIELD” returns for its final season on ABC, following last season’s dramatic and time hopping cliffhanger. In “The New Deal,” the team arrives in the past to stop the Chronicoms from enacting a terrible mission that could end SHIELD’s existence as we know it.
Time to Catch Up | In 1931 New York City, a group of nasty Chronicoms invade an alcohol sale and literally steal the faces of a group of cops. With the time traveling Zephyr having just arrived in the 30s, Daisy and Mack must deal with the newly awakened LMD Coulson, who is rather overwhelmed with the overload of backstory of the real Coulson’s life over the last six years.
As Simmons explains that she and Enoch followed the Chronicoms back in time to stop them on their unknown mission, Deke buys the team period accurate clothing, so he, Daisy, Mack and Coulson can investigate the faceless cops’ murders, while Enoch uses advanced tech to heal up May.

Welcome to 1931 | As Simmons gives Yo-Yo some fancy new robotic arms, Deke explains the “Avengers: Endgame” time travel rules to the group- basically, that they can make small changes to the timeline, but nothing major.
Deke and Daisy investigate the faceless bodies, while Coulson finds a swordfish on the whiskey that he deduces was the password for a Prohibition hideout. He and Mack head to the bar and meet bartender Freddie and his boss, an ancestor of Koenig (Patton Oswalt), who is hosting a party for New York’s governor- Franklin Roosevelt.
Role Reversal | Meanwhile, after dealing with some sexist cops, Daisy gets targeted by one of the Chronicops, as they call them, but knocks him out and takes him back to the Zephyr, where Simmons interrogates him. Coulson, Daisy, Mack and Deke accompany Freddie to FDR’s party, which is guarded by the Chronicops. But when they get the chance to kill FDR, they don’t take it.
Simmons gets a name from the Chronicop: Freddie, who meets a lady in red who hires him to deliver a mysterious vial to the docks. The Chronicops kill the woman, but Daisy and Coulson team up to fight them and take them out, with Mack and Deke rescuing Freddie.
Coulson and Daisy take the woman to Koenig’s bar and demand to know why someone would want to kill Freddie and Koenig reveals that Freddie’s last name is Malick- the father of Gideon Malick, future head of HYDRA. Coulson realizes that if HYDRA doesn’t exist, neither does SHIELD. They have to keep Freddie alive to save SHIELD.
