“Agents of SHIELD” Recap: Mommy Dearest

We’re past the halfway point of “Agents of SHIELD’s” final season and in “After, Before,” things heat up in a crazy way. Left with limited time until the Zephyr jumps into oblivion, the team is forced to meet Daisy’s mother in the past for help, where a familiar face causes anarchy.

Jump Around | Flashing back to the moment Mack left the Zephyr, almost as soon as he leaves, the ship’s time travel drive malfunctions, having taken damage from the missiles a few episodes ago. The ship keep jumping every twenty minutes, going forward a few months every time, and with a force field protecting the time drive, they’re forced to ride the jumps until the Zephyr eventually implodes under the strain. After picking up Mack and Deke from the 80s, the team tries to figure out what to do while they 3D print a new Coulson- yes, really.

Daisy wakes up after being tortured by Malick and suggests going to see her mother, Jiaying (Dichen Lachman) to heal Yo-Yo’s powers so she can use them to get past the force field and shut down the time drive. Left with little options, May and Yo-Yo take the Quinjet to Afterlife, where they see Gordon and Li chasing down an Inhuman girl named Korra, before they take the women to Jiaying.

Working Through the Issues | Jiaying runs tests on Yo-Yo against the wishes of Li, but determines that her issues aren’t physical, but mental. She locks May and Yo-Yo in a room together to work out her past and May senses Yo-Yo’s past, namely that she was staying with her uncle when he was robbed by a gangster and her taking a cross necklace from the gangster indirectly led to her uncle’s death.

After this, May hears Li and Jiaying walking down the hall and discussing Korra having destroyed her room. May confronts them and Jiaying reveals that Kora’s Inhuman powers cause her to release destructive energies and they wanted to study what took away Yo-Yo’s powers to do the same to Korra.

Abandon Ship | As Team SHIELD prepares to parachute out of the Zephyr before it implodes, Korra steals a gun from a guard and tries to kill herself, but is stopped by Nathaniel Malick, who is about to attack Afterlife with his HYDRA army and offers her a chance to join him and harness her destructive powers. As HYDRA attacks, Jiaying tries to talk Korra down and addresses her as her daughter. Korra doesn’t listen and uses her powers to hurt Li, as May and Yo-Yo get Jiaying to safety.

They race back to the recently re-arrived Zephyr and everyone is prepared to haul ass to the Quintjet, when Yo-Yo has an epiphany: She can use her powers without bouncing back to her previous position. She zooms over to the time drive and yanks out the crucial component without bouncing back and stops the time jumps. But as Enoch is fixing the drive so they can go home, he says that it didn’t work and the Zephyr time jumps again.
