“Agents of SHIELD” Recap: When the Dust Settles

The ominously titled season finale to “Agents of SHIELD,” “The End,” payed off the stupidity of the Talbot-gone-evil storyline while also delivering some emotion and action. Even with the show receiving a late sixth season renewal, this episode lived up to its title.

As Talbot prepares to end the world, team SHIELD must wrestle with a moral dilemma that could mean the end of the world, or the end of one of their own.

The Choice | Team SHIELD is still trying to decide whether or not to use the last of the Centipede serum to save Coulson or kill Talbot. But May strips the decision from them when she destroys the Kree death serum, forcing them to save Coulson’s life over saving the world. But May still allows the barely breathing Coulson to choose to take the serum or not.

Clinging to Hope | Talbot forces Robin to tell him where he rips the world in half- Chicago. Hasn’t Chicago been through enough doomsdays? Coulson joins the team as they fly to the Windy City and Daisy acknowledges that she can’t lead SHIELD and makes Mack the new Director. Mack, Fitz and May go aboard the alien ship that Talbot commandeered to rescue Robin and her mother, while Coulson reveals to Daisy that he did not take the serum and trusts in her to talk Talbot down.

Full Circle | Daisy confronts Talbot and he ends up pummeling her into the ground, creating a crater and suddenly turning into the ending of “The Matrix Revolutions.” Just like in that movie, Talbot tries to absorb Daisy to get her powers, but Coulson secretly stashed the Centipede serum inside Daisy’s gauntlets. She takes the serum and it gives her the strength to blast Talbot into space. But the aftershock causes a cave in at the building where Fitz, May and Mack are and Fitz is buried. He clings to life… for about a few minutes before they see a piece of metal in his stomach. Fitz dies. Yes, you read that right. FITZ. DIES.

But there’s a slight loophole here: Remember when Fitz froze himself in cryo to meet the others in the future? Simmons is heading there to wake the frozen Fitz up! Thank God for complicated time travel logic! Coulson, realizing that he doesn’t have much time left, bids a tearful goodbye to SHIELD and tells Daisy that he’s proud of her. She tells him that she loves him, and he returns the favor. Coulson and May are dropped off at the real Tahiti to live out Coulson’s last days in peace, as the others fly off in the Zephyr.
