“Agents of SHIELD” Recap: The Big 100

“Agents of SHIELD” celebrated their 100th episode with plenty of familiar faces, big reveals and shedding of tears, both of sorrow and joy in “The Real Deal.” A dimensional rift occurs in the Lighthouse, forcing team SHIELD to make a difficult choice. As the team sees manifestations of their worst fears, Coulson reveals a secret that could change everything.

The Short Straw | The bomb that went off in the previous episode not only killed Noah, but destroyed three monoliths being contained in the Lighthouse’s basement. This creates a rift into another dimension that creates the teams’ worst fears realized and also turns one floor of the building into a beautiful garden. Remember that for later…

Fitz starts crunching numbers and figures out a gadget that could temporarily seal up the rift, with one major catch: Someone has to go down the rift and seal it shut, potentially dying in the process. As a Kree soldier attacks Daisy and Deke and a robo-Simmons nearly kills the barely alive Yo-Yo, Coulson makes the call to go down himself, much to the team’s objections.

There Was an Idea… | Coulson passes out abruptly and Simmons discovers that his Loki-inflicted wound is no longer being held together because when Coulson became Ghost Rider in season 4, the power burned out whatever medicine was keeping him alive. Obviously, Coulson knew about this and didn’t tell the team. Realizing that Coulson is pretty much dead no matter what, the team is devastated, Daisy the most of all as she tearfully tells Coulson that he gave her everything she has in her life. Heartstrings tugged yet? Just you wait…

Coulson goes down to the basement where Mike Peterson appears to him and pulls a “Total Recall,” trying to convince him that the whole show was a dying Coulson’s hallucination. Really? Obviously, this doesn’t last long, and the real Mike arrives to blow up a few familiar monsters, Hive and Lash among them. Coulson manages to use Fitz’s gizmo to seal the rift shut, and it was upsettingly simple. Sure, Coulson’s still dying, but I really don’t think that would’ve killed him.

It’s About Time | So, Coulson is still alive, albeit still at death’s door, trouble is averted and team SHIELD lives to fight another day. That wasn’t so bad! It’s not like they’re going to pull some last minute- Oh! I forgot to mention! Remember that garden that appeared out of nowhere? Coulson, Fitz and Deke head down to it in the elevator- and there’s Simmons in a store-bought wedding dress. Coulson officiates, Daisy sheds a tear, and Fitz tells Simmons that he doesn’t deserve her asdfghjkl.

Sorry about that. Words are hard.

Also, Deke, who went out to get Simmons’s dress, says that he bought a ring for Simmons like the one his grandmother wore. And yes, General Hale’s associate finds out that Deke shares DNA with the newlyweds. Pretty surreal witnessing your grandparents’ wedding, huh?

Did you shed a tear for the FitzSimmons wedding? Do you think Coulson can cheat death? Let us know in the comments.
