“Agents of SHIELD” Episode Review: What Is Real

“No Regrets” starts out like a regular “Agents of SHIELD” episode before two final act twists make it a great one. Coulson teams up with Mace to rescue a captive agent who could hold the key to taking down HYDRA. May questions her mission and Fitz meets with his father.

It all seems like an ordinary episode at first. Coulson and Mace go behind enemy lines to rescue the Framework’s version of Tripp, who may hold secret information about AIDA’s evil weapon. And then May bombs the building they’re in, forcing Mace to sacrifice himself to save them all. This was a surprise and after all the effort the show has gone through to give Mace a driving role in the story, seeing him die heroically was actually heartbreaking in a way.

Elsewhere, Daisy talks to Radcliffe in prison, who reveals to her the secret backdoor that can get them out of the Framework. This is perfectly timed with May realizing that HYDRA is evil as they order her to kill kids and she triggers Daisy’s Terrigenesis in the final scene. Now that Daisy is going to become Quake again, this show is getting real traction towards its finale.

“No Regrets” was a fantastic addition to the HYDRA arc with emotional impact, a few surprises and a major death to boot. It ramps up the stakes for our heroes and galvanizes them to bring their best for the endgame.

“Agents of SHIELD” airs Tuesdays on ABC.
