What does one say after an “Agents of SHIELD” episode like “Self Control” other than… WHAT. THE. HELL.
There’s so much to say about this one episode that it’s hard to know where to begin. First off, the first half of the show realized the full potential of the LMD storyline, turning the paranoia up to 11 as Simmons realized that not only is Fitz an LMD, but Daisy is not and the girls must team up to save the day. These two characters have always had a spark, so it was a fun callback, albeit a grave one as these two were pretty much all that was left of SHIELD.

After a ton of emotional moments and a super creative fight scene between Daisy and a few LMDs, Daisy and Simmons managed to escape as LMD May did the right thing and blew up SHIELD HQ with the other LMDs inside. The girls end up entering the Framework to rescue the team, leading to a killer reveal that HYDRA has taken over, Daisy and Ward (Brett Dalton’s back!) are an item and to top it off, Simmons is dead! And to add insult to injury, the show is taking a month long hiatus after this week.
So, essentially, the show has gone bonkers. Show runner Jed Whedon, who also directed this episode, said that the last seven episodes of the season will deliver tons of callbacks and reward longtime viewers. With an alternate reality setup, it’ll be fun for fans to figure out what’s different and how it all changed. This is easily one of the most potential filled cliffhangers “SHIELD” has done since Daisy’s Terrigenesis and arguably, even cooler than that.
“Self Control” was without question the best episode of the show’s fourth season, and potentially the best episode of the show in general. With one of the most memorable, wild and mind-blowing cliffhangers in recent memory, this certainly revitalized this series.
