In “The Man Behind the Shield,” Coulson and company track a lead to the Superior, who has a sinister endgame in mind. Fitz feels guilt over his role in Radcliffe’s plans, while Coulson reminisces of a mission with May.
“Agents of SHIELD” delivered one of its biggest twist endings yet, as Coulson, Daisy, Mack and Mace were covertly replaced with LMDs, with only Fitz and Simmons aware of the swap. Now, the long promised paranoia of the LMD storyline is on full blast and it should be fun seeing these four as villains next week.

It was a true feat that no one saw this ending coming, considering that most of this week was a fairly conventional episode by “SHIELD” standards. Coulson got a nerdgasm inducing standoff with The Superior, as he bragged about how he has never paid him a second thought, despite a backstory that tied them together. The flashbacks with young May and Coulson were fun and playful, though it was a letdown that the subject of their mission was never revealed.
AIDA is also the subject of an interesting dilemma. At first, she seems to be having second thoughts about Radcliffe’s mission, despite being programmed by him, but in the end turns out to have been manipulating the Superior this whole time as part of Radcliffe’s twisted scheme. The writers sure are getting their mileage out of AIDA and it should lead into an interesting finale.
“The Man Behind the Shield” managed to feature one of the craziest twists since HYDRA Ward and that truly is saying something. While it might not amount to the biggest shocker in the show’s history, the clever execution made it memorable.
