“Agents of SHIELD” Episode Review: The Sacrifice Play

This week on “Agents of SHIELD,” Coulson meets with Agnes, Radcliffe’s inspiration for AIDA, to execute a dangerous plan. The Superior sends Locksley in for an assassination mission with unexpected results.

“BOOM” was a very focused episode, despite threading two separate storylines. First up, Coulson meets Agnes, a former love of Radcliffe’s who has a terminal diagnosis. The fact that Radcliffe models AIDA after an ex-girlfriend is creepy as hell, but it takes a darker turn when Agnes agrees to enter “The Framework,” a “Matrix” like dreamworld where she can be happy even after she dies. While Agnes’s decision was understandable, it nonetheless left an unsettling taste, seeing as Radcliffe ruins her life and essentially promises her paradise before killing her.

Elsewhere, The Superior sent Locksley in to assassinate Senator Nadeer, resulting in Locksley becoming a living, regenerating bomb. This was a pretty creative ability for such a minor villain, and it was satisfying to see Nadeer go. The real point of the subplot, though, was for Mace to give himself up to the Russians, which was obvious, seeing as he was whining about not having a place on the team, but still effective.

“BOOM” was a fun episode that managed to be quite riveting, seemingly setting the pieces in place for the final act of the season. Of course, it’s only February, so who knows what else “Agents of SHIELD” has in store.

“Agents of SHIELD” airs Tuesdays at 10pm on ABC.
