“Agents of SHIELD” Episode Review: Back from the Dark

“Agents of SHIELD” returned with the clever episode, “Deals with Our Devils,” in which Coulson, Fitz and Robbie were trapped in another dimension, while May went to dangerous lengths to try to save them. Simmons was dispatched on a secret mission, while the spirit of the Ghost Rider tried to finish the job.

This week was a fairly complex episode by “SHIELD” standards- the episode replayed itself from two different perspectives, much like season 1’s excellent episode “TRACKS.” It was a cool callback and also offered some interesting perspectives, such as Fitz overhearing Mace’s deal with Nadeer. Plus, from a writing and directing standpoint, it was double the work for the crew, so props to them for pulling it off.

A little more was revealed about Ghost Rider this week, as we saw the spirit of vengeance possess Mack and go on a  rampage. It was interesting seeing Mack as the “villain” of the episode and we also got a hint that Mack has a past we may unearth. Everybody’s got a secret.

AIDA also took center stage as she read the Darkhold and used it to save Fitz and Coulson with a “Doctor Strange” like portal. But the stinger reveals that she may or may not be using that information for evil ends…

“Deals with Our Devils” was a cool detour from the typical “SHIELD” style, much like a scaled back version of “4,722 Hours.” It’s when the show thinks outside the box that they really give us their best work.

“Agents of SHIELD” airs Tuesday nights on ABC.
