“Agents of SHIELD” Episode Review: A Team That Trusts

In the “Agents of SHIELD” episode “Lockup,” Coulson and the team work with Daisy and Robbie to rescue Robbie’s uncle from prison, but Lucy Bauer has other plans. Simmons works with Mace to help prepare for a television appearance, which leads Simmons to believe that the Director isn’t what he appears.

“Lockup” is starting to move the season along in a good way, giving the team a driving role in the action this time. Essentially, this week was one long prison break, pitting the team against ghost possessed prison guards and angry Watchdogs. There was some cool action this episode and the whole thing felt like a thriller, stacking the world against our heroes.

Daisy’s death wish continued as she tried to hold off an entire fleet of Watchdogs- and then got mad at Coulson and May for trying to rescue her??? At this point, Daisy is less of a guilt stricken runaway and more of a suicidal idiot who is starting to wear on the audience’s patience. Daisy’s ultimatum that she’s gone after this mission is over is also frustrating, seeing as Daisy in the past devoted so much to SHIELD that it’s hard to believe she’d just up and go.

Elsewhere, Mace outed himself as an Inhuman on national television during a debate between him and Senator Nadeer. This lead Simmons- in a very un-Simmons like move- to reveal that Mace’s supposed heroism at the Vienna bombing was not what it seemed. Mace is clearly hiding something and his deal with Nadeer in the stinger suggests more to come.

“Lockup” was a fun episode and the first real sign that the season is moving along. Next week is the last episode before “Doctor Strange” is released, so prepare for a major shakeup!

“Agents of SHIELD” airs Tuesday nights on ABC.
