In its seventh and final season, “Agents of SHIELD” is proving that it still has surprises up its sleeve.
Series star and O.G. SHIELD agent Elizabeth Henstridge revealed on Marvel Live! with Lorraine Cink that she will step behind the camera and make her directorial debut with this week’s episode on July 22, 2020.
“We filmed it so long ago and we’ve had to keep it a secret up until now,” Henstridge said in the interview, which you can view below. “Surrounded by very encouraging bosses, Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancheroen, Joss Whedon, Jeph Loeb, Jeff Bell, they were supportive of my dream of directing from the start.”

Henstridge revealed that she’s been shadowing other series directors for the last several seasons to prepare for the episode, titled, “As I Have Always Been.”
“Clark Gregg was one of the first people that was such a big cheerleader of mine and I shadowed his episodes and Jesse Bochco and a lot of our established directors over the seasons,” she continued.
“Any time I wasn’t in front of the camera, I was asking annoying questions to our crew! They were extremely supportive, but you have to prove to them that you really want it. And it took a few years.”
Though spoilers were off limits and Cink teased that last week’s episode will impact the upcoming episode, Henstridge teased a few sparse details on her directorial debut, saying, “This episode is very different than the ones we’ve done before, so we had to shoot it in a whole new way. This episode has a lot of Daisy, so to work with Chloe (Bennet) in that capacity was brilliant. We both started the show together so young.”
