At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, PopWire had the chance to sit down with Dom Provost-Chalkley and Katherine Barrell, the fan-favorite duo behind WayHaught from Wynonna Earp. As the excitement for the upcoming Wynonna Earp: Vengeance builds, I dove into what’s next for their characters and how their personal growth has influenced their performances.

Exploring WayHaught’s Evolution | I started by asking them about WayHaught’s status in the new season. Katherine quickly reassured me that while the couple is in a “very happy place,” there’s more to their story than just bliss. “Yes, we find WayHaught in a very happy place,” she explained. “But happy isn’t always the most interesting. There’s definitely some shaping up that happens. We ended on their marriage, but really, that’s just the beginning of the next chapter. Now we get to see what that looks like.”

Dom agreed, adding that portraying a realistic relationship is crucial. “It’s not realistic to think that every couple is just always blissful,” she said. “There are ups and downs to every relationship. I remember someone saying that a good relationship is like you’re doing life alongside one another. Sometimes one person goes off track, but you’re always aiming to come back together. That’s what WayHaught does so well.”

Returning to the Earp Universe | Returning to the show after a few years apart was clearly special for both of them. “It’s a dream,” Dom told me. “All of us were so grateful just for the opportunity to come back.” Katherine echoed this sentiment, saying, “It was so special to revisit those characters again and see the next chapter. They’re such a huge part of us. I always feel like I have this thing that they continue to live off in their own way, and then we just get to come and check back in.”

Personal Growth and Its Impact | Curious about how their personal lives influenced their portrayals, Kat, who became a parent since the last season, shared how this new experience impacted her take on Nicole. “Becoming a parent made me tap more into Nicole’s protective nature,” she said. “The deep love and sense of family—I felt that more deeply coming back to the role. Plus, being pregnant on set, having that support while doing scenes, it was a big marker in my life.”

Dom, on the other hand, reflected on their journey toward embracing their queerness. “The three years I was away involved a lot of personal growth,” they said. “Coming into my queerness and authenticity was really important for me to bring into Waverly’s journey. We see Waverly in a much more settled place in her queerness. I’m proud of how Waverly has matured.”

Character Pronouns and Representation | We also touched on the subject of Waverly’s pronouns. Dom confirmed that they have remained the same, and discussed the decision behind it. “We had a conversation with Emily about whether Waverly’s pronouns should change,” they said. “But when I tapped into it, I felt that Waverly should remain as she is. It felt more authentic for her to stay true to her character rather than changing it to follow my personal journey.”

Looking Forward and a Call to Fans | Finally, when about the future of WayHaught and the possibility of more specials. “Hell yeah,” Dom responded enthusiastically when asked if they’d be up for another special. Kat was blunt about the need for fan support. “We need metrics and numbers,” she said. “We need people to watch this over and over again. Watch it, share it, put it on during dinner parties—recruit! That’s what we need to make it happen.”

With their heartfelt dedication and the continued support from fans, it’s clear that WayHaught’s story is far from over. As we all await the new season, the dynamic between Dom and Kat promises even more of the genuine storytelling that has made Wynonna Earp so special.
