“SurrealEstate” Exclusive: Savannah Basley Previews Season 2 Finale, Talks Zooey & Susan’s Intense Interaction
Ever since Susan Ireland left The Roman Agency in George R. Olson’s SurrealEstate, no one has been more concerned about her absence than Zooey. It’s a surprising change from Season 1 where the two didn’t seem to get along, that is until episode #104, “A House is Not a Home,” did we see the two finally get to know and bond with each other.
When Luke (Tim Rozon) returned to the agency after his indefinite hiatus, Zooey quickly noticed and called him out on his rude behavior towards Susan. The work environment for the two became so toxic that she left the agency and soon enough got enveloped by her obsessive new home.
Noticing something was very wrong, Zooey took it upon herself to find out why Susan’s (Sarah Levy) brief time away turned into an extended leave. In the season’s penultimate episode, just as the team were going for a rescue mission, a preppy Susan hops off the elevator as if nothing at all had happened or changed.
SurrealEstate‘s Season 2 finale, “Letting Go,” picks up right where we left off. And Susan’s inexplicable change in behavior is raising red flags for everyone in the agency. What happened to Susan, and why has she become so insufferable?
PopWire recently caught up with Zooey’s portrayer, Savannah Basley, to talk about one intense scene in particular from the season finale where Susan’s actions became just so wrong and even more so out of line.
“In that moment, you’re watching Zooey’s heart break a little bit in real-time,” Basley tells us. “There’s just a lot of confusion in that moment. It’s kind of like a slap in the face from a best friend a little bit. I think that’s kind of an interesting moment for her.
“I wanted to show more emotion to Zooey and maybe show a little bit why she might come off a little bit sassy or guarded at first, and that’s because she really does care about [them].
“I think in that scene, I just really wanted to get across this thing of kind of like [Susan as] an older sister. Just like really in that moment being kind of disappointed. I think she’s really disappointed in that moment, but also just really heartbroken.”
There are a few heartbreaking moments in the season finale — so just a word of advice: bring some tissues. It’s an all-around fantastic episode of SurrealEstate, and Basley explains why everyone should be tuning in.
“To watch our brilliant performances, obviously,” she says with a laugh. “It’s a very ensemble kind of episode, which I always really love. I love anything ensemble-type where you have lots of characters. That’s really fun.
“That’s the fun thing about it,” Savannah Basley adds, “it’s like all of us are in it 100% and with a few additional people happening there, which is really fun. You get to watch friends and a chosen family just kind of like go in to go save their friend. It’s just a really fun episode.”
The SurrealEstate Season 2 finale, “Letting Go,” was written by George R. Olson and directed by Melanie Scrofano. The episode airs Wednesday, December 6 at 10pm on SYFY.
