Originals Boss Talks Hayley’s Pregnancy

The Originals Phoebe Tonkin
Who knew that Klaus’ (Joseph Morgan) liquor-fueled one-night stand with Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) would lead to one of the most shocking twists in The Vampire Diaries’ history! We’re talking, of course, of the the revelation of Hayley’s pregnancy in the backdoor pilot episode of The Originals that aired this past spring on The CW.

But how is this possible? After all, vampires can’t procreate! “But werewolves can,” Sophie Deveraux (Daniella Pineda) explains to Klaus in the April 25th episode of The Vampire Diaries. “Magic made you a vampire, but you were born a werewolf.” Had Klaus known of “One of nature’s loopholes,” as Sophie puts it, he probably would’ve been more careful that night in Mystic Falls.

And therein lies one of the plot points for Diaries’ spinoff, The Originals, premiering this fall. Klaus’ attempt to reclaim post as ruler of New Orleans along with learning of Hayley’s pregnancy is what brings the hybrid back to the Big Easy.

We recently sat down with The Originals’ Showrunner, Julie Plec, where she shared a few details about the buzzed about pregnancy.

As of right now, the New Orleans-set offshoot has been picked up for thirteen episodes. If the show gets the full-season order, plans are to continue the pregnancy past the initial thirteen. If not, the whole pregnancy and birth will be contained in that short number of episodes and “it’ll be the fastest growing fetus in the history of time,” Plec jokes. Hmm, maybe Renesmee would win that title.

“We don’t want to do the whole ‘Well, wolves develop at six time speed!’ [explanation],” she adds. “We’d rather not; so if it ends up on camera, it’s because we got desperate.” We have faith that the show will go beyond thirteen episodes, so we’re expecting the hybrid birth by May Sweeps. And with this baby will come lots of changes and season one will involve “the moods and the machinations of everybody as they deal with the importance of this baby, the meaning of this baby, and what it individually means to every single character.”

Being a werewolf does have its drawbacks, especially if you aren’t able to gain full control of yourself and the bone-cracking transformation does look very painful. Having to go through that every full moon can be very frustrating. Lucky for Hayley, her pregnancy does have some perks.

“When werewolves are pregnant, they don’t transform during the full moon,” Plec reveals. “[It’s] sort of like how you don’t get your period when you’re pregnant. The idea is that that’s the one time of the month that they are actually free from this curse because the werewolf bloodline is spread genetically, so werewolves need to be able to procreate.”

“She she will enjoy nine months of not having to be a werewolf which I think will actually give her a good perspective as she’s trying to find herself.”

The Originals premieres this fall on The CW.
