The bestie-ship of heroines Astrid (Jana Morrison) and Lilly (Samantha Aucoin) on SYFY’s Astrid & Lilly Save the World is dangling by a thread after Tate (Kolton Stewart) outed Lilly for dating Pudge Patrol’s number one enemy, Candace (Julia Doyle). With the Guardian (Mike Shara) due to make an appearance during the impending lunar eclipse, the fate of the world depends on the monster hunters repairing their friendship. Like a blessing in disguise, the newest monster in town is a devilish doppelgänger with a desire to steal its victim’s identity and replace them indefinitely. Astrid soon finds herself face-to-face with double the Lilly and in an effort to take over Lilly’s life, her evil twin wins Astrid’s forgiveness. The question is: can Astrid distinguish between the real Lilly and the monster impersonating her? Heads roll in the Astrid & Lilly Save the World penultimate episode, “Doppelkopfel” (written by Alix Markman and directed by Jordan Canning). Let’s just hope they aren’t the wrong heads!
Drama in the Closet | Candace has messed up in a big way with Lilly when she denied dating her to protect her popularity, and a quick make-out sesh in the drama closet (oh, the irony) isn’t going to fix it. Lilly makes this crystal clear to Candace with three empowering words: “I deserve better”. Yes, you do, girl!
After calling and texting Lilly multiple times to no avail and now her attempt to kiss and make up proves unsuccessful, Candace is at a loss. How will she earn Lilly’s forgiveness? Before they can reach any kind of resolution, Candace is summoned by Vice Principal Knight (Megan Hutchings) for the Romeo & Juliet Down Unda play rehearsal.
Radio Silence | Much like Candace, Astrid is getting radio silence after trying to get a hold of Sparrow. Astrid hasn’t heard from him since detention where he learned that she and Lilly are monster hunters. Just when Astrid could use her BFF’s support, Lilly shows up and apologizes for dating the enemy – only it isn’t the real Lilly. Clone Lilly has officially begun her campaign to infiltrate Lilly’s life before absorbing her once and for all.
Double the Lilly | Lilly unknowingly passed on her human likeness to the Castrolux when she bumped into the mannequin in the drama closet. Now, she’s in the bathroom meeting her sinister double for the first time. Before Lilly can makes sense of what’s happening, the Castrolux swipes her phone and takes off.
Visiting Brutus, Lilly discovers that her doppelgänger has already been there with Astrid, and her friend has no clue that she’s hanging out with a parasite on the brink of removing her from existence. The lowdown on the Castrolux is that it needs to be decapitated in order to be vanquished. Brutus joins Lilly in the field because she’ll need all the help she can get to convince Astrid that she’s the real Lilly.
Next to fall for the Castrolux’s Lilly life takeover is Candace when they run into each other in the hall. Candace apologizes to the double for not being public about her feelings for Lilly and asks her to the opening of Romeo & Juliet that night. Clone Lilly accepts the invitation and Candace is made to believe that all has been resolved.
Sparrow’s Conscription | Sparrow finally makes an appearance, but something’s off about him. Astrid hastily concludes that he must be the Castrolux. That is, until she sees the Guardian’s cult tattoo on his wrist! Little does Astrid know, Christine (Geri Hall) had kidnapped him the night before on his way home from detention and conscripted him into her youth group army.
Lilly Throws a Punch | Meanwhile, Lilly is looking high and low for her impersonator at Pine Academy. During her desperate search for the monster, she runs into Tate. He apologizes to Lilly for putting her relationship on blast and asks if there’s something he can do to make it up to her. Lilly is quick to recruit his help in hunting down the Castrolux.
The two of them end up running into Candace just before the play begins and she thanks Lilly, again, for agreeing to attend the show. Lilly rejects Candace’s invitation, sending Candace into a spiral of confusion and ripping their relationship back into tatters. This time, Candace is the one who’s heart has taken the punch.
Juliet’s Monologue | Lilly is still fuming over Candace’s denial of their relationship and doesn’t realize the hurt she’s inflicted on Candace. Tate shares his take on the situation and reminds Lilly how much it means to Candace to have her support and love because everyone else in Candace’s life has consistently disappointed her and fell short of being there for her when she needed them most. Putting her anger aside, Lilly decides to show up for her girl.
When Candace sees Lilly standing in the wing of the stage, she delivers a heartfelt Juliet monologue to her true love:
My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My love as deep; the more I give to thee,
The more I have, for both are infinite.
Lilly is initially flattered but then quickly reminds herself that she deserves more than to be kept as a secret girlfriend and leaves Candace standing on stage.
Doppelgänger Turns Doppelgäng | Astrid goes on the hunt for a second Lilly after realizing she’s been hanging with the Castrolux the entire day when suddenly she sees her best friend being chased down by her evil twin. Scythe in hand, Astrid follows them into the library. Just to add some fuel to the chaos, Astrid finds that the Castrolux has also taken on her human form. Now, they have a whole dopplegäng on their hands to exterminate. After an exchange of personal fun facts that only a best friend would know, the girls are able to determine who the real Astrid and Lilly are and bag themselves two doppelkopfels for the orb. Two Castroluxes down, one more to go!
Candace ditches the last scene of the play and finds Lilly in the decapitation aftermath. She professes her love to Lilly, promising to always show up for her. Candace goes on to say that she’s crazy about Lilly and she wants the world to know it. Lilly can’t imagine the real Candace saying these things, especially in front of anyone else, so she’s struck with the belief that this must be an imposter standing in front of her. Astrid raises the scythe to slay their final doppel just as two Valories (Christina Orjala) are seen running down the hall. Wow, that was too close for comfort!
Brutus and Astrid take care of the final doppelgänger monster while Candace’s words sink in with Lilly. Candace’s admission was very real and so is Candace’s love for her. To consecrate their relationship, Candace asks Lilly to be her date to the school dance and Lilly tells her moms that they’re dating. #FortWell is back!
Alright, my fellow Monster Hunters! I can’t believe we only have one episode left of Season 1. Things are looking to be on the up-and-up with our favorite BFFs back together, and only one monster left to annihilate before the big show down with the Guardian and Christine’s cult of brainwashed minions.
