At the shocking and emotional end of Charmed‘s third season, Mel and Maggie Vera said their heartbreaking goodbyes to their sister Macy Vaughn. When The CW’s spellbinding series returns for its fourth season, viewers will find that a lot has changed.

PopWire had the opportunity to chat with stars Melonie Diaz and Sarah Jeffery (Mel and Maggie, respectively) about how their characters are dealing with their tragic loss and about the new witch in town.

The Season 4 premiere, “Not That Girl,” picks up after a substantial time jump since we last saw the sisters. As Melonie Diaz explains, she doesn’t think the two sisters will ever really forget her or recover from what has happened. “[Mel and Maggie] definitely have two different ways of coping,” Diaz tells us.

“Mel is just going balls to the wall, going to the bars, dating girls, drinking. I think it’s been really fun to play that and to see Mel having fun versus her trying to control everything. I think the audience will have a lot of fun seeing her do that too. I think a lot of people can relate. You kind of get really depressed or you kind of just try to forget everything. That’s where we find her in the beginning of the season.”

Fans will be seeing a lot of Mel hanging around in a new set built for the new season, a bar called The Blue Chamilia. It is at this bar where the Charmed Ones will encounter a lot of new magical characters. “Sometimes I’ll be sitting in hair and makeup and I’ll be like, ‘Oh, my God. That’s a new person, that’s some crazy shit!” Diaz says.

“It’s just so cool to see the people and the characters that come out of our trailer. It’s like a little world. It definitely keeps our work fun and I think people are going to enjoy a lot of the characters this season.”

One of the new characters we’ll be meeting is the new Charmed One who joins Mel and Maggie to regain the Power of 3. Sarah Jeffery shares that it’s interesting that every season has had a different vibe and that every season has felt like an evolution to where the characters are now. With the addition of the new witch, played by Lucy Barrett, the actress says that the new dynamic is exciting to play with.

“It’s just been really fun to have a new different energy come in and something different to play with and kind of change the dynamic of the sisters,” Jeffery says. “They are all so different, and our new Charmed One is so different from Macy’s character. It just brings a new energy that I think is really fun to play with and I hope that comes across this season.”

The opening scene in Charmed‘s new season is our introduction to the character, and fans will quickly fall in love with her and her vibe. “I think she’s really fun,” Diaz says. “She’s fun, she’s funny, artistic. I think she’s a little wild, a free spirit. The magic world, with all the shit happening, is very heavy and I think she really brings a lightness to it. She absolutely is very likable and I feel like her energy kind of changes how the girls feel.”

As for the actress who portrays her, Diaz exclaims that her new scene partner is “awesome.” “She’s Australian, she’s really fun. She’s positive, she’s kind. It’s just always nice as an actor to have a new sparring partner in scenes.

“Season 4 of a show is a good time to do that if you are going to do it,” Diaz continues. “Keep it fresh. I think it’s good for us as actors and also us characters, too, because with Macy’s death, they’re both really grieving and I think the lightness of her character helps them try their best to get over it.”

With this new witch comes new power. And while we are not allowed to reveal what the new Charmed One brings to the table, Jeffery teases that the new power comes “to the surface in an interesting way and is a reflection on who she is as a person.

“Without giving too much away,” she adds, “it’s a very useful power and it helps us sort of get ourselves out of situations that are sticky situations that, maybe otherwise, would’ve been unfixable. It’s a very useful power.”

Charmed Season 4 premieres Friday, March 11 at 8pm on The CW.
