“Hawkeye” Series Premiere “Never Meet Your Heroes” Recap: Enter Kate Bishop

Hawkeye is finally here with the first two episodes dropping on Disney+ and a new hero enters the pantheon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop arrives with a bang in “Never Meet Your Heroes,” in which Clint promises his kids the best Christmas ever, while Kate discovers a criminal conspiracy. Let’s dive in!

Protecting the Family | In 2012, a young Kate Bishop overhears her parents arguing about a move, right before the Chitauri forces attack their apartment and nearly destroy her, until a perfectly timed arrow from Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) kills them. Kate is immediately enthralled, but her mother grabs her and takes her away.

Unfortunately, her father didn’t make it and at his funeral, Kate is going on about how she needs a bow and arrow to protect the family. Flash forward to present day and Kate (Hailee Steinfeld), after taking a bet from her friends, fires an arrow to the bell tower at her school, which accidentally destroys the thing as security catches her.

In New York City, Clint Barton takes his kids to see “Rogers: The Musical,” but gets triggered by seeing an actress playing Natasha onstage and leaves early. After a call with Laura (Linda Cardellini), who says hi to them from the Barton farm, Clint promises the kids that they’re going to have the best Christmas ever. We’ll see how long that lasts…

The Auction | Kate returns home to her mother (Vera Farmiga), who cancels her credit cards after hearing of the bell tower and drags her along to a charity auction with her new boyfriend, Jack (Tony Dalton). At said auction, a man named Armand (Simon Callow) tells Kate that Jack and her mother are now engaged, which is news to her. She goes outside to get some air and sees a dog staring at her before she goes back inside and overhears Armand appearing to threaten her mother.

Kate follows him downstairs to a wine cellar and sees him with Jack bidding on items recovered from the destroyed Avengers compound, including Clint’s gear as Ronin from when he was executing mob bosses. Then, a masked gang blows up the wall and arrives to steal a watch from the lot, but Kate dresses in Ronin’s costume and kicks their asses before escaping, just as the getaway driver for the gang finds the watch and the dog mauls him. Kate rescues the dog from getting hit by oncoming traffic and feeds him pizza at her apartment.

Kate’s next mission is to track down Armand, so she shows up at his apartment and finds him dead. She is then swarmed by gang members on the street but is rescued by Clint, who saw her wearing the Ronin suit on the news. He has one question for her: “Who the hell are you?”
